BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team concluded its 2016 season with an 8-3 loss to The State University of New York at Buffalo on Saturday (May 21) afternoon at Audubon Field. Buffalo raced out to an early 7-0 lead, before the Falcons battled back and scored three of the game's final four runs.
"Unfortunately, we were not able to end the season with a series win," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "I am proud of our five seniors, and I know that they are going to be successful in whatever they choose to do. They have been great for our program and Bowling Green State University."
Seniors Kory Brown, Devin Daugherty, Tyler Greiner, Andrew Lacinak and Matt Smith played their final games as Falcons. Smith had a huge day, finishing off his career with a 4-for-5 day at the plate to end the season with a .288 batting average.
Daugherty also capped off a phenomenal senior season and career. The right-hander entered in the third inning for his school-record 30th appearance of the season. Daugherty surpassed former Falcon Nick Bruns, who made 29 appearances across the magical 2013 season. Daugherty pitched 4.1 innings of shutout baseball, allowing just two hits while striking out four batters and walking none.
Greiner's last plate appearance resulted in an RBI groundout in the eighth inning. Brown was arguably the best defensive centerfielder in the conference this season, and Lacinak has been a workhorse all season and all throughout his career. He finishes his career ranked sixth all-time in innings pitched with 244.2.
Tony Landi also finished off a historic season with 0.2 scoreless innings of work. Landi made 29 appearances on the season, which would have tied the school record if it weren't for Daugherty's season. Landi also finishes the year with eight saves, which ties the school record.
Buffalo scored three runs in first inning, one run in the second and three more runs in the third to pull away with the victory. Along with Greiner's RBI, Cam Daugherty hit an RBI double in the three-run eighth. Riley Minorik drove in the other run in the inning with a single.
Bowling Green finishes the season with an overall record of 17-37. The Falcons went 7-17 in Mid-American Conference play, earning series wins over Toledo, Ohio and Ball State.
