BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Two-time WCHA Player of the Month Mitch McLain scored his 13th goal of the season, but it was not enough, as the Bowling Green State University hockey team fell 2-1 to the Bemidji State Beavers on Thursday night at the Slater Family Ice Arena. Chris Nell saved 25 of 27 shots to keep the Falcons within range for the entire contest.
Most of the first period was quiet for both teams. The Falcons had one flurry of shots several minutes into the contest but could not penetrate Michael Bitzer's wall. Lukas Craggs then took a cross-checking penalty at the 8:36 mark to give the Beavers their first power play of the game. However, none of BSU's five shots could get past Nell during the man advantage.
The Beavers were granted a man advantage once again three minutes later when Mark Friedman was sent to the box for interference. This time, the Falcons permitted only two shots against Nell, both of which he saved. Meanwhile, BGSU earned three short-handed shots on goal during those power plays.
BSU's Dylan McCrory dented the scoreboard with 2:01 remaining in the first period with a shot through the Nell's five-hole from between the circles. Bemidji held the 1-0 lead through the first intermission.
The Falcons remained within one goal until Kevin Dufour took a tripping penalty 8:08 into the second period. Just 32 seconds later, Jay Dickman scored a power play goal on a redirect from Kyle Bauman for a 2-0 lead. BGSU finally managed a power play of their own with 2:30 remaining in the frame, but their two shots could not get past Bitzer. Bowling Green had only seven shots on goal in the second period and 16 total in the first 40 minutes.
The third period was markedly different for BGSU. The Falcons put heavy offensive pressure on Bitzer and earned a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal during the period. Unfortunately, the pressure did not result in a score until late in the period.
The Beavers' Tommy Muck was called for slashing with 4:23 remaining to give BGSU a five-on-four advantage. The Falcons peppered Bitzer, who took a shot off the mask before McLain was able to slip the puck into the net to halve the 2-0 deficit. Mark Friedman and Stephen Baylis earned assists on the play.
Bowling Green earned three shots against Bitzer during the final 3:55 of the game but could not secure the equalizer. The Falcons played the final 1:26 with an empty net.
The Falcons are now 10-12-2 overall and 8-8-1-1 in WCHA play, while the Beavers improve to 15-7-3 overall and 15-2-2-2 in the WCHA. The teams will meet in the conclusion of the two-game series at 8:37 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6 at the Slater Family Ice Arena. The game will be televised live by the American Sports Network.
