BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Frederic Letourneau and Stephen Baylis scored goals to help the Bowling Green State University hockey team earn a WCHA point with a 2-2 tie against Alaska on Saturday night (Oct. 28). BGSU now owns a 3-3-1 record and moves to 2-1-1-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association games. Trailing 2-1, Alaska tied the game with a third period goal, and neither team could score during the five-minute overtime. Although the game officially ended in a tie, the teams then played an extra three-on-three overtime for an additional point in the WCHA standings. The second overtime ended with the game still in a 2-2 deadlock, so the teams went to a sudden-death shootout. Alaska won the shootout 1-0 to earn the extra point.

This was Bowling Green's second WCHA tie under the current rules. Last season, the Falcons earned an extra point with a second-overtime victory over Alaska-Anchorage on Nov. 25, 2016. The Falcons had not previously played in a WCHA shootout.

Scoring Plays

BGSU took the initial lead of the game at the 9:54 mark of the first period. After an Alaska shot deflected off the post, Brandon Kruse created a breakout opportunity after a turnover in the Falcons' zone. Kruse sent a pass to Max Johnson in front of the goal, who dished to Frederic Letourneau. Letourneau sent a shot from the left circle for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second period, Alaska's Kyle Marino was called for tripping. BGSU had several chances in their first power play of the game but needed nearly the full time to score. Mitch McLain won a faceoff in the Falcons' offensive zone which went directly to Cameron Wright. Wright found Stephen Baylis alone in front, and Baylis sent it home for a 2-1 lead with 14 seconds left in the power play at 12:44 left in the period.

Statistical Standouts

Letourneau's goal is his second of the young season; he also scored in a 4-1 win over Michigan State. In two seasons, he has eight career goals, and the Falcons are 5-2-1 when he scores.
Baylis also scored for the second time this year, and his other goal was also in the 4-1 win over MSU. He now owns 14 career goals.
Cameron Wright added his fourth assist of the season; he continues to lead the Falcons with seven points.
Mitch McLain added an assist and finished with two points (1 goal, 1 assist) during the series.
Freshmen Max Johnson and Brandon Kruse also contributed assists. Johnson owns the team lead with five assists, while Kruse has now posted a goal and three assists.
Ryan Bednard (1-2-1) made his fourth start in goal and saved 29 of 31 Alaska shots. For the season, he has 107 saves against 116 shots for a save percentage of .922.
The Falcons finished with a 38-31 edge in shots on goal; Baylis and Wright led the Falcons with seven each.
BGSU was 37-33 on faceoffs. McLain was 17-12, while Connor Ford won 12 of his 18 attempts.
Bowling Green was 1-for-6 on the power play tonight and 1-for-8 in the series.
BGSU's penalty kill unit was a perfect 6-for-6 on Saturday and 9-for-9 in the series.

Bowling Green seeks to improve on their three-game unbeaten streak next weekend with a pair of contests in Houghton, Mich. against Michigan Tech. Both contests in the two-game series will begin at 7:07 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4. The Falcons return to the Slater Family Ice Arena on Nov. 10-11 for a two-game series against Lake Superior State.
