NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 7-5 decision on Sunday (Feb. 26) afternoon to Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. The game was played at BU's Rose Park. Belmont scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win the ballgame that was a part of the weekend's Mule Mix Classic.
Bowling Green slips to 0-6 in 2017 with the loss, while Belmont improves to 3-4 with the come-from-behind victory.
"This was obviously a very tough way to end a disappointing weekend," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We were playing a complete game up until the bottom of the eighth inning. We had really set things up nicely, and I thought we were in great position. Unfortunately, we are heading back on the bus with a winless weekend, but we will continue to grind and get better as a team. We have another tough weekend coming up."
Zac Carey got the start for the Falcons, and allowed two runs and four hits over 5.0 innings of work. He struck out one, and walked three. Carey allowed both of his runs in the first inning. Bowling Green trailed by a 2-0 score until the fourth inning.
The Falcons scored all five of their runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. After a ground out started the frame, Nick Glanzman worked a walk, and quickly moved over to third after Justin Mott singled up the middle. Blake Jenkins then scored Glanzman with a single to center field.
Bowling Green loaded the bases when Jeff Scott was hit by a pitch. Jake Wilson registered an RBI, and knotted the ballgame at 2-2 with a bases-loaded walk. Joe McGuinness promptly singled to center, scoring two more runs. Randy Righter conclude the scoring by singling to third base.
Chase Antle gave the Falcons 1.1 scoreless innings, and then gave way to Kody Brown, who worked into the eighth inning, and recorded two outs in the eighth. However, Belmont went on to score five runs with two outs off Brown and Tony Landi to steal the win.
McGuinness finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. Mott also had two hits, and scored a run, as well. Both Wilson and Blake Jenkins went 1-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Righter and Derek Drewes had one hit, apiece.
Bowling Green will hit the road next weekend for Morehead, Kentucky. The Falcons will take on the Morehead State University Racers in a three-game series over March 3-5. Bowling Green will then begin its annual spring trip with a game against Jacksonville State in Emerson, Georgia.
