BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will play its final game before conference play begins this weekend, as the Falcons are set to travel to Dayton to take on the Flyers on Tuesday afternoon (March 21). The game, which was originally scheduled for 3 p.m., has been moved back to a 4 p.m. start.
"We are excited for this week of baseball," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Tuesday will be our last non-conference game before the MAC season starts, and it will be important for us to get off to a good start to the week. Dayton is a team that came to our place last year, and beat us pretty good. We've already put the weekend behind us, and we are completely focused on playing a strong game on Tuesday against a very good club."
The Falcons dropped a doubleheader on Sunday (March 19) to Niagara. The ballgames were the first two games of the season at Steller Field. Bowling Green entered the doubleheader having won three of its last four games, as the Falcons earned a pair of wins over Georgia State, to go along with a victory over Army. All of those contests were played in Emerson, Georgia over spring break.
Bowling Green is 4-12 on the season, but BGSU has received great pitching as of late. The Falcons have allowed an average of 2.5 runs over the last six games. In both games of the doubleheader against Niagara, the Orange and Brown allowed just three runs in each game. In fact, the BGSU bullpen combined for 6.2 innings, and allowed just four hits, zero runs, and struck out eight batters while walking four batters.
On offense, senior Greg Basalyga has been leading the charge. He leads the team in batting average (.333), slugging percentage (.533), hits (15), RBI (11), and is tied for the team lead in doubles (3) and home runs (2). Basalyga has 13 hits over his last nine games, and he's already had three games in which he's registered three hits. In the first game of the doubleheader versus Niagara, Basalyga went 3-for-4.
The Flyers own a 6-11 record, and just loss three of four games across the weekend to Ball State. However, the weekend prior to that, Dayton won two games in a three-game series with Western Illinois. Maverick Prine and Connor Echols lead an offense that is hitting .229 as a team, averaging 7.8 hits and 5.7 runs per ballgame. Prine is hitting a team-high .306 on the season, while Echols leads the club in hits with 19. Both players have a team-high 11 RBI.
Bowling Green has been scheduled to play at Dayton in each of the last four seasons, but the game has been cancelled due to inclement weather each time. The Falcons last played at Dayton during the 2012 seasons. BGSU won that ballgame by a score of 5-2. Bowling Green holds a 44-21 advantage in the all-time series.
Bowling Green opens up conference play this weekend at Eastern Michigan. The Falcons will play a three-game series in Ypsilanti, Michigan, beginning with a 6 p.m. ballgame on Friday, March 24. BGSU will conclude the series with games on March 25 (3 p.m.) and March 26 (1 p.m.).
