KENT, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team (10-26) dropped a 3-0 decision at Kent State University (25-12) on Tuesday (April 25) evening. The ballgame was played at KSU's Schoonover Stadium. After six scoreless innings to start the contest, the Golden Flashes scored once in the seventh and twice in the eighth to escape with the win.
The Golden Flashes broke the ice with a two-out double in the seventh, and then registered three hits in a two-run eighth that saw the hosts take a 3-0 lead. Bowling Green left 11 men on base.
"We had so many chances to score early on, and we didn't come through," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "You can't waste all of those opportunities against a team like Kent State. Last game, we jumped on them early, and capitalized.
"We couldn't do that tonight, and they eventually made us pay. Our pitching was great tonight, and that is a potent offense. We will shift our attention to a huge weekend at home."
Bowling Green's pitching staff racked up 11 strikeouts. That Falcons received a dominant start out of sophomore Chase Antle. The hard-throwing righty blanked the Golden Flashes over 3.0 innings. Antle allowed just two hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out four batters. He faced just 10 batters.
Freshman southpaw Nathan Lohmeier took over, and shut out Kent State over 2.0 innings. The lefty surrendered one hit, while striking out two and walking none. In BGSU's 9-3 win over Kent State at Steller Field on April 11, Lohmeier fired 2.0 hitless innings.
Sophomore Brad Croy struck out the side in the sixth inning, and kept the game scoreless by getting a crucial looking strikeout with runners at the corners. Freshman Chandler Stillings and junior Kody Brown fanned one batter apiece over 1.0 inning of work.
The Falcons had a plethora of scoring chances in the game. Bowling Green had runners at the corners with one out in the first, but the Falcons grounded into a double play. In the second, BG put runners on first and second with one out, before a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
In the third, the Orange and Brown put runners on second and third with one out, however a lineout and strikeout allowed KSU to pitch out of the jam. The fourth inning saw BGSU put runners at first and second with one out, while the fifth saw BG put its first two runners on base with no outs. In the ninth, Bowling Green brought the tying run to the plate with two outs.
Sophomore Riley Minorik went 2-for-4 in the game. Freshman Jake Wilson, sophomores Logan Giddings and R.J. Williams, and junior Derek Drewes each added a hit apiece. Drewes was also hit by a pitch, while senior Greg Basalyga, sophomore Cam Daugherty and redshirt-sophomore Jeff Scott coaxed one walk each.
Bowling Green will return to Steller Field this weekend to host the RedHawks of Miami University. The series is slated to begin this Friday (April 28) at 3:05 p.m. With expected weather in the area this weekend, stay tuned for potential changes to the weekend schedule.
