BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team is set to travel to Ann Arbor on Wednesday (April 5) to take on the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines at UM's Wilpon Complex. The ballgame is set to begin at 4 p.m. Bowling Green and Michigan will be meeting for the ninth-consecutive season on Wednesday afternoon.
"These games are great for our program, and our players love that we play them," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "It's always great to play nationally ranked programs, and to play in big-time environments. Michigan has a tremendous team this year, and they are currently playing as good as anyone in the country.
"We are coming off a great weekend at Northern Illinois, and this is just a great opportunity for us right now. I want our guys to believe that we can win, and leave everything out on the field. I love that we've been able to play Michigan for a number of years now, and I think this game each year is great for BGSU Baseball."
Bowling Green (7-17; 3-3 MAC) earned its first MAC series win over the weekend at Northern Illinois. The Falcons swept a doubleheader on Saturday (April 1) after losing the series opener the day before. After giving up three runs in the first inning of the first game, Bowling Green outscored the Huskies by a 16-2 margin across the rest of the day.
In the doubleheader sweep, a number of Falcons had huge offensive performances. Freshman Jake Wilson went 4-for-10 on the day with six RBI. He went 2-for-5 with four RBI in the first game, and then went 2-for-5 with two RBI in the finale. Senior Greg Basalyga went 2-for-6 with three runs, three walks, a home run and one RBI.
Junior Justin Mott, who caught both games, registered two hits in each ballgame. After going 2-for-4 with two runs in the opening game, Mott conclude his day by going 2-for-3 with a run and RBI. Redshirt-sophomore Jeff Scott went 3-for-8 with three runs and three RBI.
On the mound, Bowling Green's day was highlighted by Zac Carey's complete game six-hitter. The junior right-hander allowed just one run, but it was unearned. He needed just 98 pitches in the complete game, and he tied his career high with six strikeouts. He walked just one batter. After he set down the first two batters in the eighth, Carey had retired 15-consecutive batters.
In the first game, sophomore Chase Antle picked up his first collegiate win in impressive fashion. Antle allowed three runs in the first inning, and nearly didn't survive, as he threw 34 pitches. But after the first, Antle posted four-consecutive perfect innings, and ended his day by retiring 13-straight batters.
Michigan, which plays a home game tomorrow versus Notre Dame, currently owns a 22-6 record. The Wolverines have won six-straight games. For the first time since 1977, Michigan has scored 10-plus runs in five-consecutive games. The Wolverines went 5-0 last week, and outscored its opponents, 64-12.
Bowling Green last beat Michigan during the 2014 season. BGSU earned a 7-4 victory in Ann Arbor that year on April 22. However, Michigan holds a 43-15-1 advantage in the all-time series. UM won last season's meeting at the Wilpon Complex by a score of 5-0.
After Wednesday's game, the Falcons will prepare for a Battle of I-75 home series versus the Rockets of Toledo over April 7-9. The series is set to begin this Friday with a 3:05 p.m. first pitch. The two clubs will then meet on Saturday and Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
