Falcons And Buckeyes Meet Tuesday Night In Columbus

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In its second-to-last midweek game of the 2017 season, the Bowling Green State University baseball team is set to battle Ohio State University on Tuesday (May 9) night in Columbus. The ballgame is slated for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch, and will be played at OSU's Bill Davis Stadium.
"These are the types of games that our kids really like to play in," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "We are coming off a great win on Sunday, and hopefully we can keep things rolling into Tuesday. Ohio State is obviously a great club and program, and we'll need to play a clean baseball game to give ourselves a chance."
Last weekend, the Falcons claimed a 5-4 win on Sunday (May 7) to salvage a three-game series at Ohio, keeping their MAC Tournament hopes alive in the process. After allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bowling Green scored the game-winning run in the top of the ninth inning to secure the dramatic victory.
The Falcons will need to win their series this weekend at home versus Western Michigan, and then get some help the following weekend. Bowling Green will play at Elon the final weekend of the regular season, while the rest of the MAC will be participating in conference play.
Bowling Green's chances of making the tournament increase dramatically with a series sweep, as opposed to just taking two games. At this point, it looks like the three teams that BG will have to finish ahead of to make the MAC Tournament will be Miami (6-12 MAC), Toledo (7-11 MAC) and Western Michigan (8-10 MAC).
Ohio State is coming off a 2-1 series loss at rival Michigan last weekend. The Buckeyes will enter play with a record of 18-29. Ohio State is hitting .247 as a team, led by freshman outfielder Dominic Canzone's .352 batting average. Senior catcher/outfielder Jalen Washington leads the team with 31 RBI, while senior infielder Zach Ratcliff has a team-high six home runs.
The Buckeyes own a 5.05 team ERA, and opponents are hitting .280 versus Ohio State. The Ohio State pitching staff allows 9.68 hits and 5.70 runs per game. The Buckeyes average 7.31 strikeouts compared to 3.42 walks per ballgame.
Bowling Green begins its weekend series versus Western Michigan at 3:05 p.m. at Steller Field on Friday, May 12. The series will conclude with 1:05 p.m. starts on Saturday (May 13) and Sunday (May 14). On Sunday, seniors Greg Basalyga, Nick Glanzman, Tony Landi, Addison Rospert and C.J. Schildt will be honored during a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
