MOLINE, Ill. – The Quad City Mallards of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) have signed forward Matt Pohlkamp, a 2017 graduate of the Bowling Green hockey program, for the 2017-18 season. Quad City is the ECHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights of the National Hockey League (NHL).
The Baxter, Minn. native made his first mark on professional hockey when he notched one goal and two assists in nine games played with the Toledo Walleye last spring, after reaching the Western Collegiate Hockey Association Championship with the Bowling Green program. As a Falcon, Pohlkamp tallied 13 goals and 10 assists for 23 points in his senior season, a year in which he was named to the WCHA All-Academic team for the third consecutive season. Over the course of his four years with the Falcons, Pohlkamp produced 38 goals, 50 assists and 88 points in 160 games.
"Matt is a workhorse. He'll be the first guy on the ice at practice and the one being chased off the ice by the Zamboni afterward," Mallard's head coach Phil Axtell said. "He has a team-first mentality and will add depth to the Flock. He is also one of a number of players we've signed who have played a part in turning a program around over their four years in college hockey."
Pohlkamp is the fourth player from the 2017 senior class to sign a professional contract, and sixth overall from a 2016-17 team that made Bowling Green's first appearance in a conference championship since 1988. Pohlkamp will join former 2016-17 teammates Pierre-Luc Mercier and Kevin Dufour in the ECHL, while Sean Walker, Chris Nell and Mark Friedman secured contracts in the American Hockey League (AHL).
