Hockey's Rauhauser Named WCHA Defenseman of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – After recording a team-leading 39 points in 41 games played, Bowling Green sophomore Alec Rauhauser has been named Defenseman of the Year by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
A native of Bismarck, N.D., Rauhauser's 26 points in 28 WCHA conference games ranked second among all defensemen and ninth overall of the league's players. On the season, Rauhauser registered nine multi-point performances, the most on the Bowling Green squad., appeared on the scoresheet in 28 of the season's 41 games played and completed the year with a team-leading plus-21 rating on the ice. While tallying six goals, 20 assists (tied for first) and 26 points (second) in 28 WCHA games, Rauhauser ranked second among league blueliners with a plus-16 rating.
A special teams dynamo, he tallied a league defenseman-best 13 power-play helpers and a WCHA-high 16 power-play points. While finding his name on the scoresheet in 17 league contests, Rauhauser also ranked among the WCHA's top-20 defensemen with 34 blocked shots.
By his nine goals and 30 points in his sophomore campaign, the blueliner has now posted 61 total points in his 80 games played with the Bowling Green program. While being as high as first this season, Rauhauser completed his sophomore year ranked seventh overall in the nation in defenseman points per game (0.95).
Rauhauser was named to 2018 All-WCHA First Team for his efforts this season, after being named to the All-Rookie Team last year. A standout year for the defenseman, Rauhauser also picked up two WCHA Defensive Player of the Week nods (Nov. 20, Jan. 3), two WCHA Defensive Player of the Month awards (Nov., Jan.) and Great Lakes Invitational All-Tournament Team accolades in the 2017-18 campaign.
The 2017-18 WCHA Offensive Player and Defenseman of the Year were chosen from the All-WCHA First Team forwards and blueliners, respectively. The Goaltender of the Year is the first-team All-WCHA netminder, while the Rookie of the Year was selected from the All-WCHA Rookie Team. WCHA Men's League member team head coaches vote for the All-WCHA Teams, and then again for these awards.
Rauhauser will now have a chance at WCHA Player of the Year as voting by the league's head coaches will select the best player from the four individual Player of the Year honorees.
