Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Ohio University on Saturday (March 30) afternoon by a score of 12-2. The middle game of the three-game set was played at OU's Bob Wren Stadium. The rubber match is set for Sunday (March 31) at 1 p.m.
The Bobcats jumped out early, and never looked back, plating three runs in the opening frame. Ohio led by at least three runs the rest of the way, and made the score look more lopsided than it was by putting up a four-spot in the eighth.
Bowling Green's offense was provided by senior catcher Joe McGuinness. The power-hitting lefty doubled home a run in the fourth before launching a solo home run – the second of his career – in the sixth. The McGuinness moon shot was to dead center, and hit well over the 405 marker on the center field wall.
Ohio registered 13 hits compared to Bowling Green's seven. Freshman Gage Schenk turned in a strong relief appearance for the Orange and Brown, logging a perfect seventh inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Jake Wilson went 2-for-4 on the day, as did McGuinness. Bowling Green's other hits were recorded by Mike Malewitz, Neil Lambert, and Ty Suntken. Brad Croy's impressive 12-game hitting streak came to an end on the afternoon.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"Today wasn't our best game, but we came here to win a series. That's what I told the guys after the game. We would have loved to play for another sweep tomorrow, but our goal is still in reach. We'll need to play our best game of the weekend in order to leave with a victory. These rubber match games are big when you look back on things at the end of the season."
