Bowling Green Sweeps Michigan Tech With 6-2 Victory, Advance To Sixth Straight WCHA Semifinal

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The No. 15 ranked Bowling Green State University hockey team completed the sweep of Michigan Tech in the first round of the WCHA playoffs by a score of 6-2. The Falcons scored six times on 35 shots on goal. BGSU was led by Max Johnson who contributed to the first four Falcon goals, tallying two goals and two assists. With this win Bowling Green advances to the WCHA semifinals for the sixth consecutive year, and will face Northern Michigan following tonight's tournament results.

Scoring Plays

Michigan Tech scored the first goal of the evening with Jake Lucchini taking advantage of an MTU power play. This 4:35 into the first period. He was assisted by Trenton Bliss and Alex Smith.
The Falcons tied it up at one with an Adam Smith goal coming immediately after a face-off win by Max Johnson, who was credited with the lone assist. This at 5:49 in the first period.
Max Johnson added a goal of his own later in the first period at 9:30 in to give BGSU a 2-1 lead. Cameron Wright and Chris Pohlkamp earned assists on the goal.
Connor Ford added a power play goal to extend the Falcons lead to 3-1 in the first period. Assists were credited to Max Johnson and Brandon Kruse.
Michigan Tech answered with a goal of their own with Lucchini scoring his second goal of the period. Again, he was assisted by Alex Smith and this time also by Seamus Donohue.
Max Johnson added his second goal, and fourth point, of the game in the second period putting the puck past the MTU goaltender on a BGSU power play. This at 7:36 into the second period. Taylor Schneider and Tim Theocharidis picked up assists on the play.
In the third period, Frederic Letourneau scored on a penalty shot attempt following a hooking call charged to Michigan Tech on his way to the net.
To close out the Falcons' scoring for the night, Connor McDonald soared a full ice goal as Michigan Tech puled the goaltender in the third period to increase the lead to 6-2.

Other Key Plays

In the first period alone, Max Johnson tallied three points, scoring one goal and assisting on both of the other two Falcon goals. He would go on to score again in the second period, having a hand in the Falcons first four goals.
Ryan Bednard impressed the crowd by twisting and turning during the third period to save multiple goals within a span of mere seconds to preserve the BGSU lead.
In the third period, Frederic Letourneau drew a hooking call during a break away, giving him a penalty shot attempt in which he scored.
Following Bowling Green's sixth goal, the Huskies made a change between the pipes, opting to pull junior starter Matt Jurusik for senior Devin Kero.
On the game, the Falcons rang multiple goals off the iron that just missed the net.

Falcon Stat Facts

Following his second goal of the evening, Max Johnson had scored or assisted on five straight Falcon goals dating back to Friday's (March 8) game.
Max Johnson scored goals 16 and 17 on the season extending his team lead and marking his third multi-goal game of the season. With two assists as well, he now has 37 points on the season for the Falcons, putting him just one point behind Kruse for the team lead.
Frederic Letourneau's penalty shot attempt is the Falcons' first since Brandon Kruse scored one a season ago against Miami on Nov. 25, 2017.
Chris Pohlkamp tallied his 10th assist on the season, gaining the point on Johnson's first goal of the night.
Connor Ford became the third Falcon this season to reach 15 goals, totaling two points over the weekend series.
Assisting on Connor Ford's goal, Brandon Kruse became the first Falcon this season to reach 30 assists.
Connor McDonald's full ice goal in the third period marked his first goal of the 2018-19 season.
With the win, the Falcons will advance to the WCHA semifinals for the sixth straight season, making it each year they have been a member of the conference. The win also marks the ninth straight year that Bowling Green has won a best-of-three playoff series. This stands as the longest active streak in a best-of-three series in the NCAA.
When scoring five goals or more, the Falcons are now 9-0 on the season.

Up Next

Bowling Green will be traveling to Marquette, Mich. next week to take on the Wildcats of Northern Michigan in the WCHA Semifinals. This will be the second year in a row the Falcons and Wildcats will meet in the semifinal of the WCHA playoffs. It will also be in the same location as last year when Northern Michigan hosted Bowling Green. On the season, the Orange and Brown were 2-2 against the Wildcats, splitting both series with two being the largest margin of victory for either team.
