Minorik’s Three-Hit Day Not Enough As Dayton Beats BGSU

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by the University of Dayton on Wednesday (May 1) by a score of 6-3. The ballgame, which lasted just seven innings due to lightning strikes and a thunderstorm, was played at UD's Woerner Field.
Dayton scored the final five runs of the game to erase an early 3-1 deficit. The Flyers move to 25-21-1 with the victory, while Bowling Green drops to 13-27. The Flyers outhit the Falcons on the afternoon by a 10-7 margin.
David Stopp got the start for the Falcons, striking out three over 3.0 innings while walking one and surrendering one run. Jake Wilson's first home of the season and second of his career gave Bowling Green a 2-1 lead in the third. Wilson pulled a ball down the right field fence for his 14th extra-base hit of the season.
Riley Minorik singled in his first three trips to the plate, including an RBI single into center field in the fifth that gave the Falcons a 3-1 lead. Minorik finished the day 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. BGSU's other hits were posted by Dylan Dohanos, R.J. Williams, Nick Neibauer and Wilson (two-run home run in the third inning).
Dayton battled back for two in the fifth and three in the sixth. A little bit of controversy got Dayton's fifth-inning rally going. With runners on first and second and no outs, Wilson made a spectacular diving catch in center. The runner from second tagged two bases to score. After a long argument from the BGSU dugout, pleading that the runner left several steps early before the catch, the umpires upheld the call.
Gage Schenk struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning. Damon Egnor and Daniel Buratto turned in scoreless appearances, as well. Both Falcons logged 0.2 innings on the mound.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"I thought our guys came ready to play and we got off to a nice start. Dayton is a good team and they fought their way back into the game, and from there, it was anyone's game to be had. We are still searching for ways to win close games, and it comes down to execution and making plays. I expect our guys to play inspired baseball this weekend against Central Michigan."
