Kent State Rallies Late To Beat BGSU In Series Opener
May 10, 2019 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team scored nine runs on 11 hits, but it was not enough, as Kent State University defeated the Falcons by a score of 18-9 on Friday (May 10) afternoon. The Mid-American Conference series opener was played at Warren E. Steller Field.
After trailing by scores of 3-0 and 5-3, Bowling Green scored five runs in the sixth inning to take an 8-5 lead. However, Kent State went on to score 13 unanswered runs before the Falcons plated one in the ninth. KSU matched BGSU's five spot with a five-run seventh. The Golden Flashes then added two runs in the eighth before a six-run ninth.
Kent State, which moved to 26-20 (13-7 MAC) with the win, registered 20 hits on the afternoon. Bowling Green dropped to 14-31 (6-16 MAC) with the loss. The Falcons took advantage of three Kent State errors by scoring six unearned runs.
In BGSU's five-run sixth, the Falcons received RBI singles from Tyler Haas, R.J. Williams and Jake Wilson. Riley Minorik scored another with a perfectly-executed squeeze bunt, while Bowling Green's other run scored in the frame came home on a throwing error.
Wilson, who drove in a run in the second on a ground out, finished with two RBI and was the only Falcon on the day to finish with multiple RBI. Brad Croy led the team in hits with a 3-for-4 effort. Haas had two hits, as did Neil Lambert, who along with Croy, scored two runs. Additionally, Anthony Smith and Dylan Dohanos picked up hits for BGSU.
COACH SCHMITZ QUOTE
"We were down multiple runs on two occasions, and our guys battled back against a really good pitcher to take a three-run lead. That seventh inning was the big inning. We just scored five runs in the sixth, and they came back the next half inning and got them all back. That's a huge momentum swing late in the game, and it's tough to overcome that. A shutdown inning right there would have put us in great position."
SCHEDULE CHANGE
With inclement weather expected in the Bowling Green area on Sunday, the series will now conclude with a Saturday (May 11) doubleheader. The first game of the day will begin at 12:10 p.m. A Senior Day ceremony to honors BGSU's 12 seniors will take place prior to first pitch.
