BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated in 10 innings on Friday (March 12) in its series opener at Western Kentucky. WKU scored two runs in the final frame to take the series opener by a score of 4-3. The non-conference ballgame was played at WKU's Nick Denes Field. The four-game series will resume tomorrow with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
BGSU took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning with a Jared Johnson RBI double, but the hosts scratched across two runs in the bottom half to claim the win. Johnson drove home two runs for the Orange and Brown. The Falcons drop to 2-5 on the early season with the defeat.
Bowling Green tied the game at 2-2 with a run in the eighth. Kyle Gurney was hit by a pitch with one out to start the rally. Adam Furnas moved Gurney to third with a single, and then Johnson drove him home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Both teams traded runs in the third inning, beginning with an RBI double from Tyler Ross. Ross went 2-for-5 on the day. Jack Krause also posted multiple hits for the Orange and Brown, going 2-fo-3 at the dish with a walk.
The Falcons received an outstanding start from Andrew Abrahamowicz. The right-hander allowed just five hits and two runs over 6.0 quality innings. Abrahamowicz struck out a season-high eight batters. Abrahamowicz has recorded 19 strikeouts across 17.0 innings this season. The senior has now logged 6.0 innings in back-to-back starts. Will MacLean continued his strong season with a dominant effort, holding Western Kentucky without a hit over 1.1 innings.
BGSU out-hit the Hilltoppers by a 9-8 margin. Dylan Dohanos had a hit and scored a run. Furnas finished 1-for-3 with two walks. Andy Gaytan and Tyler Haas notched one hit apiece. Bowling Green's defense turned in another clean game without an error – its sixth such effort in seven games.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today's game had a lot going on. Neither team wanted to lose that game. It was intense and competitive from the first inning through the 10th and that's how we are expecting this series to go for the remaining three games. In the end, WKU capitalized and got the last two timely hits after the leadoff batter reached. Andrew Abrahamowicz pitched his most complete game and was a tone setter from the first inning through the sixth. Will MacLean came on to bridge a great 1.1 innings while our offense tied it up. We felt good and will still feel good about the ball in Nate Lohmeier's hands with the game on the line. Tyler Haas caught a very good game behind the plate and kept the flow moving the way we want it to go. Our defense made some really good plays to shut down anything they tried stringing together, which we are coming to expect. Jared Johnson, Jack Krause and Tyler Ross all continue to see the ball really well at the plate. We found success offensively when we worked the counts into our favor. But we battled all day and I expect us to do it again for 14 more innings tomorrow. We are learning to be comfortable in close games and working on finding ways to finish games on the road. The more we find ourselves in these spots, the better we will become."
