Hays Twirls Gem In 2-1 Loss At Ohio

Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated in a pitcher's duel on Saturday (March 20) in the Mid-American Conference opener at Ohio University. The Bobcats defeated the Falcons by a score of 2-1. The league-opening series is being played at OU's Bob Wren Stadium.
BGSU's Tyler Hays, a standout pitcher in his own right, went toe-to-toe with potential first-round pick Joe Rock. The Ohio lefty and Hays each went six scoreless innings, but it was Hays who left the game in line for the win. The Falcon right-hander allowed just two hits and punched out two batters.
A seeing-eye single with two outs capped a two-run seventh inning for OU and proved to be the difference in the game. One inning prior, in the top of the sixth, Kyle Gurney plated Tyler Ross on a fielder's choice, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Bowling Green put the potential game-tying run in scoring position in each of the final two frames, but the Bobcats were able to pitch around the traffic.
Gurney led the Falcons with the RBI and a 2-for-4 day at the dish. Tyler Haas and Andy Gaytan each registered a hit for the Orange and Brown. Nathan Lohmeier struck out three batters and did not allow a run over two innings.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today's game was very well pitched on both sides. It was similar in a sense that each side gave one another their first run with an error. The difference was our mistake led to an extra run crossing home plate on a ground ball that found a hole in the seventh. Joe Rock, their starting pitcher, was very good. He showed why he's going to be a pro and made it tough on us. But so did Tyler Hays. I thought Hays was the toughest pitcher to score on today and just kept coming at them with a relentless drive that led him to six shutout innings and his best performance to date. I feel really good about the way he gets after hitters and speaks his results into existence."
WEEKEND SCHEDULE
