Perry Miller Shines In Start; Picks Up Fourth Win Of Season
On the mound, Perry Miller picked up his fourth win of the season for the Falcons behind a strong start, giving up just one run in the outing. As for at the plate, Bowling Green eclipsed the 10-run total for the 15th time this season through 31 games. Additionally, BGSU has scored seven or more runs in a game 23 times this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, Perry Miller utilized a seven-pitch second inning to keep the Penguins off the board along with the help of a 5-4-3 double play after a leadoff single, sending the teams to the bottom of the second with the game still scoreless.
- After a one-out double from Leighton Banjoff and a walk from Brady Birchmeier earlier in the bottom of the second, Cooper McKenzie put the Falcons on the board with a single through the right side gap, scoring Banjoff.
- The Penguins responded with a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
- Nathan Archer started the third inning off with a walk followed by a Tyler Ross single. Landon Roque reached base safely after a fielder's choice that resulted in Ross being out at second to put runners at the corners. Jack Krause then stepped to the plate and loaded the bases with a walk. A two out-walk to TJ Takats walked in Archer for a 2-1 BGSU lead.
- After the walk the Penguins opted for a pitching change with BGSU bringing Birchmeier to the plate. Birchmeier roped a double over the left fielder to clear the bases and add to the Falcon lead, making it 5-1. Bowling Green was able to load the bases again after consecutive walks from McKenzie and Parker but no more runs came around to score.
- After a leadoff single, Miller mowed down the next three consecutive batters to keep the advantage with the Falcons through four innings.
- Kade Arn started the top of the fifth in relief and was able to work a scoreless inning thanks to another 5-4-3 double play.
- In the bottom of the fifth, a lead off walk from Takats brought Birchmeier up. After a stolen base and wild pitch, Takats was able to advance to third. Birchmeier worked a walk which prompted a Youngstown State pitching change. Takats beat the throw home after a grounder to the second baseman off the bat of McKenzie to push the lead to 6-1.
- Later in the inning, Caden Parker singled to shallow right to bring around McKenzie to score and extend the lead to 7-1.
- The Penguins cut into the lead after a two-RBI single shortened the lead to 7-3. Luke Krouse came in the game for a relief appearance with one out in the sixth inning and ended the momentum for the Penguins.
- Jack Krause started the inning with a hit-by-pitch followed by Banjoff earning a walk. With two outs in the inning, the bases became loaded for McKenize after Birchmeier was plunked. McKenzie was able to work his way to a walk, bringing Krause into score.
- After a pitching change, Parker stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and earned the RBI after being hit by a pitch, making the lead 9-3. Archer followed that up with a two-RBI double, extending the lead to 11-3.
- The two teams worked a scoreless seventh, but Youngstown State chipped away at the lead in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and a throwing error to trim the lead to 11-5. After a pitching change, a single added another run to make it 11-6.
- With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Archer blasted a home run over the left field fence to add a run making the score 12-6 going into the ninth.
- Youngstown State answered back with two doubles, bringing one run around to score each time. A throwing error allowed another runner to score, making the score 12-9.
- Isaiah Seidel entered the game with two outs and runners on first and second and recorded an out for the save.
