BGSU Matches Program Record For Walks, Moves To 17-0 In MAC Play
Ohio jumped on the board first with three runs in the top of the first, but a BGSU response quickly came to tie the game at 3-3 after one. OU reclaimed the lead at 4-3 with a top of the third run, but BGSU tallied 14 runs over the third and fourth to push ahead 17-4. BGSU added a pair in the sixth, five in the seventh and two more in the eighth to secure the 26-5 final, marking the second time this season BGSU has eclipsed the 25-run mark in a game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Four soft-hit singles in a row for Ohio in the top of the first put three runs on the board for them, jumping out a 3-0 lead.
- Two Falcon singles from Nathan Archer and Garrett Wright gave the Falcons the corners with no one out in the bottom half. Following a walk from DJ Newman the bases were loaded with no outs. Tyler Ross was able to put one on the board with a sacrifice fly to right.
- Jack Krause followed Ross by drawing a walk to load the bases again. A hit by pitch for Leighton Banjoff put a second run up for the Falcons, forcing home Wright. A bloop single for TJ Takats extended his on-base streak to 22 and tied the game for the Falcons at 3-3 with Newman scoring.
- In the second with a Bobcat runner on first, a bouncer up the middle was stopped by Nic Good as he delivered a strike to Tyler Ross as he came over the bag at second to throw out the OU runner at first to end the half inning with a double play.
- A home run from Ohio's Gideon Antle broke the tie in the top of the third. BGSU turned their second double play of the game to get out of the third with one Bobcat left on base and the score at 4-3.
- Newman and Krause singled to start the bottom of the third with Banjoff driving in his second RBI of the game on a bouncer to short to tie the game, 4-4.
- Takats was hit by a pitch before Landon Roque and Caden Parker each logged RBI singles to push the score to 6-4.
- Archer then etched his name into the Falcon record book yet again with a three-run home run as the Falcons extended the lead to five with a 9-4 tally.
- The Falcons kept the pedal down in the fourth innings. Following two singles from Newman and Ross and a walk to Banjoff, Takats singled down the third base line driving in Ross and Newman. Then a frozen rope to center from Roque singled in Banjoff while a single from Caden Parker scored Takats for a 13-4 lead.
- For the second time on the day Archer crushed a three-run home run that drove in both Roque and Parker, stretching the BGSU lead to 16-4.
- After batting around,Krause in his second at bat of the fourth inning singled in Garrett Wright with a knock to left, sending the teams to the fifth inning with a 17-4 BGSU lead.
- Another turned double play for Ross got the Falcons out of the top half of the fifth with the score remaining.
- After a strong outing from Nic Good, going five innings for the Orange and Brown, Calvin Mitchell came in relief of the starter. Mitchell was accompanied by a handful of offensive and defensive subs over the next inning for BGSU.
- Cooper McKenzie came in for Wright as a pinch hitter and drew a walk. The same result came for Zack Horky stepping in for Newman. The run of subs continued with David Silva coming in for Ross, delivering an RBI single up the middle to score McKenzie.
- Gavin Ganun came in for Krause and drew another walk that was followed by a Banjoff sacrifice fly bringing the 19th run of the game home for BGSU, leading 19-4.
- Following walks from Parker, Archer, and McKenzie to begin the seventh inning, Silva added his second RBI on the day with a bases-loaded walk to push home Parker.
- In the very next at-bat, Ganun doubled in two more for the Falcons with Archer and McKenzie scoring.
- After an Ohio pitching change, Banjoff drove in his fourth and fifth RBIs on the day with a double down the third base line, bringing home Silva and Ganun for a 24-4 advantage.
- In the top of the eighth the Bobcats got their first run since the third inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly to left center.
- Parker led off the BGSU half of the eighth with a double before Archer reached on a dropped third strike. Thanks to a McKenzie single, a Horky walk brought in Parker while a fielder's choice off the bat of Silva brought in Archer making the lead 26-5 for the eventual final.
- Luke Krouse came in to close out the ninth, logging three-straight outs to secure the victory.
