Falcons To Face Michigan State Tuesday, Purdue Fort Wayne Wednesday
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will be on the road for their next five games, including two midweek contests. The Falcons will first head to East Lansing on Tuesday (May 7) for a 6 p.m. first pitch against the Michigan State Spartans. BGSU will remain on the road Wednesday (May 8) with a 3 p.m. start against the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, concluding the non-conference portion of the 2024 schedule.

Scouting Michigan State
Michigan State has won their last three Big Ten series, taking two of three from Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan in consecutive weekends. The Spartans are no strangers to MAC competition, previously playing five games against MAC teams. Michigan State lost to Ball State, 4-1, during the first weekend of the season and fell to Central Michigan, 10-0 in seven innings, on April 9. The Spartans have also played Western Michigan three times this year, winning all three matchups, including two run-rule outcomes.

Scouting Purdue Fort Wayne
Since the last meeting between the two teams, Purdue Fort Wayne has gone 4-10 and have lost five of their last six. During the stretch, the only MAC opponent for Purdue Fort Wayne was Toledo on April 24, topping the Rockets 4-3 in extra innings, playing 13 frames. Other matchups for the Mastodons include losing two of three to Oakland, falling to Notre Dame, taking one of three from Youngstown State, being swept by Wright State and coming up short in two of three to Milwaukee.

Top Three Offense In The Nation
The Falcons are currently maintaining the third-best offense in the nation, averaging 10.4 runs per game. Only Austin Peay (11.1) and Wofford (10.3) are averaging more runs per game than Bowling Green this season. Through 43 games, the Orange and Brown have scored 7+ runs in 30 contests while surpassing 10+ runs in 21 games and 15+ in nine games, including a nation-leading 34 runs against Ball State on March 16 and 26 against Ohio on April 20. BGSU is also one of the best in the nation at getting on base, logging the eighth-best on-base percentage in the country (.431).
Archer Re-Writing The Record Book
Nathan Archer is putting his name all over the BGSU baseball record book. So far this season, Archer has already cracked the top 10 all-time in three career stats and four single-season stats. Now, he's on the cusp of another. Entering the week, Archer is tied for fourth all-time in single-season home runs (16), tied for seventh in single-season RBI (57), eighth for single-season runs (59) and tied for 10th in single-season bases (131). As for career, he's tied for sixth in home runs (33), tied for sixth in triples (10) and ninth in total bases (323). Now, Archer is closing in on the top 10 all-time for career RBI with 130, needing six more to enter the top 10.
Seidel Continues On-Base Streak
So far this season, Sam Seidel has appeared in 35 games for the Falcons and has reached base at least once in all 35. Seidel also reached base in the final 11 games of the 2023 campaign, bringing his on-base streak to 46 games. For his career with the Falcons, Seidel has drawn 53 walks over two seasons and has been hit by a pitch 15 times while maintaining a batting average of .287, including a mark of .315 during the 2024 season.
BGSU Breaking Records
As a team, the Falcons have already set one program record for a season and are closing in on another. Bowling Green this season has drawn 267 total walks at the plate, breaking the program record on May 1 against Oakland with 11 games still left in the regular season. The previous record was set at 253 walks during the 1978 season, a record that stood for 46 years. Now, the BGSU pitching staff is trying their hand at a record. This year, Falcon pitchers have combined for 327 strikeouts and need 41 more to match the program record. Currently, the record is set at 368 strikeouts by the 1999 squad.
