Wright Becomes Sixth Falcon To Earn Freshman All-America Honors, First From Perfect Game
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green freshman Garrett Wright was named to the Perfect Game Freshman All-America Second-Team, becoming the sixth player in program history to receive the Freshman All-America honors and the first from Perfect Game. The honor for Wright comes after being named the MAC Freshman of the Year, All-MAC First-Team and All-MAC Defensive Team.
Wright joins DJ Newman's 2023 campaign to mark just the second time in a two-year span that BGSU has had multiple players receive the recognition. In 2002, Tyler Saneholtz and Len Elias both were named Freshman All-Americans by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. BGSU's complete list fills out with Kyle Gurney (2021) and Jake Wilson (2017).
"Garrett Wright had a special first year here at BGSU individually," said head coach Kyle Hallock. "With this accolade, he has thrust himself into the national spotlight as one of the best players in his class in the country. When you watch Garrett practice, it is not a surprise that he's regarded as one of the best at his position. We look forward to seeing what he does for an encore in 2025."
Wright played in 40 of BGSU's 53 games this season, making 38 starts. Over the course of the season he was hit by 21 pitches, setting the program record for a single-season while ranking fifth in the nation and first among freshmen for HBPs per game (0.53). Wright posted a MAC-leading .503 on-base percentage, ranking 27th in the nation overall and third among freshmen. He added the best freshmen batting average in the MAC at .380. Wright also finished 26th overall and fourth among freshmen for the toughest players to strike out in the country, striking out just once every 11.1 at-bats.
