KSU’s Late Scoring Sours Falcons’ Strong Start Against Golden Flashes Friday

Turner Turns Away 12-Straight Golden Flashes In Middle Innings
KENT, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team jumped out to a strong start in conference play in the early innings Friday (March 6) against Kent State. Vinny Salvione launched a solo home run in the fourth while Jacob Turner tossed five scoreless to start off. However, Kent State found the scoring column in the sixth, registering eight unanswered runs across the final four frames to jump in front for an 8-1 final. Bowling Green and Kent State will continue the opening weekend of MACtion on Saturday (March 7) with a 3 p.m. first pitch.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both starting pitchers nearly produced one-two-three innings to start the game, but a two-out single for Kent State marked the first base knock of the day. Bowling Green's first base runner of the day came in the second inning with Brady Birchmeier being hit by a pitch to start the frame.
- In the bottom of the second, Kent State threatened with two runners in scoring position and only one out, but Jacob Turner worked for a strikeout before an on-the-run catch by Pauly Mancino as he collided with the wall ended the inning.
- The first run of the day came in the top of the fourth for the Falcons with Vinny Salvione taking the first pitch yard down the left field line for a solo home run, giving BGSU a 1-0 advantage.
- Beginning in the second inning and lasting until the sixth, Turner retired 12-straight Golden Flashes on the mound, keeping the BGSU lead, 1-0.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Kent State registered a three-run home run to push in front, 3-1, through six innings. In the seventh, another three-run home run for KSU extended their lead to 6-1. Kent State tacked on two more in the eighth for an 8-1 score.

- Jacob Turner put together a strong start for the Falcons, tossing five scoreless innings while also sending down 12 consecutive Golden Flashes before the first KSU run of the day. Turner also struck out five batters, his second time this season with five or more strikeouts in a game.
- Pauly Mancino tallied a single in the eighth inning, moving his on-base streak to 10 games and his hitting streak to six games, both new leading the team.
- Brady Birchmeier ripped a single in the top of the seventh for the Falcons, extending his hitting streak to five games, second on the team.
- Anthony Mitta doubled to right center to begin the ninth inning, pushing his on-base streak to eight games, second on the team.
- Vinny Salvione crushed his second home run of the season, joining Sam Seidel and Zack Horky as Falcons with multiple blasts so far this season. Those three have combined for six of BGSU's eight total home runs this year.
