Spencer Schmitz enters his sixth season as an assistant coach in the Falcon program after stints as a volunteer assistant coach in 2005 and in 2008.
Schmitz, who has been the primary hitting coach for the past four seasons, helped two Falcons earn All-MAC honors in two consecutive years (2008, 2009) - shortstop Ryan Shay and third baseman Derek Spencer - as the Falcons led the conference in batting average in both seasons. Under Schmitz' guidance, Shay finished the 2008 season with a batting average of .412 which led the MAC, ranked 22nd nationally and at the time was the second-best singe-season batting average in school history. The Falcons also set the school record for home runs in a game hitting eight on two occasions.
Last season he watched on as Jon Berti had the Mid American Conference's fifth best batting average, at .356. Berti went on to be a 17th round draft pick of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
In 2009, Schmitz was a large reason the team posted its highest batting average since 2001 with a .345 mark on the year. They also scored the most runs in a season (442) and had their highest slugging percentage (.528) and on-base percentage (.416) since 2002, had the most hits in a season as a team since 2001 (645). Twelve of thirteen players that played in 25 or more games and had more than 50 at-bats hit above .300 last season. He also helped Tyler Elkins to hit a career-best .406 in 2009, ranking 48th in the nation.
In 2012, Schmitz was instrumental in developing freshman Brian Bien into an All-MAC player at the plate.
Schmitz, a native of Bowling Green, Ohio and former Falcon player, served as an assistant coach at Longwood University during the 2006-07 season. While at Longwood, he helped lead the Lancers to a 34-19 record as he served on a coaching staff that includes current Falcon assistant coach Rick Blanc. The Lancers as a team batted .313 for the season and drove in 277 runs, stole 88 bases and collected 137 total extra-base hits. Their team .313 average placed them 32nd on the national list.
Prior to coaching at Longwood, Schmitz held the top assistant position at Bowling Green High School during the spring of 2006, which followed his serving as the assistant general manager and top assistant for the Lake Erie Monarchs of the Great Lakes Summer Baseball League.
Schmitz, the son of BGSU head coach Danny Schmitz, was a four-year second baseman and designated hitter for the Falcons (2001-04). In 2002 he was named the team's Most Improved Player as he helped BGSU capture the MAC championship for the second-straight season. He was also selected to the All-MAC academic team in 2001.
Other coaching experiences for Schmitz includes serving as an assistant coach for the Whitehouse Legion team in Whitehouse, Ohio in 2004, serving as a volunteer coach for the BGSU hockey team (2004-06) and serving as an assistant for the Bowling Green High School hockey team (2002-04). He also turned in three years service as the Director of Hockey Operations for the Falcon program.
A 2004 BGSU alum, Schmitz earned his bachelor's of science degree in sport management.
