Today we announce the No. 2 story of the year:
Pleger's Record-Breaking Season
After earning All-American status and placing seventh in the hammer throw at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships during the spring of 2013, expectations were high for Brooke Pleger heading into 2014. And Pleger met or exceeded all of those expectations. She won the MAC Championship in the event for the second consecutive year, breaking her own meet record in the process with a toss of 218-feet-9. During the regular season, she went undefeated, breaking facility records at Bowling Green, Cincinnati and Kentucky. She re-established the BGSU school record with a toss of 223-0 at the Toledo Invitational and went into the NCAA Regional Preliminary round as the No. 2 ranked hammer thrower in the country. After throwing 216-2 to finish second, Pleger headed to the NCAA National Championships with a chance to make history. Sure enough, Pleger's third-place finish at the meet meant that she became just the second two-time All-American in program history and the first in 25 years (CLICK HERE for recap). She was also bestowed the Great Lakes Region Field Athlete of the Year honor and was a Capital One Third Team Academic All-American.
