Falcons Start Strong; Lose to Ferris 3-2
November 07, 2009 | Ice Hockey
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - After allowing four power play goals in a 5-1 loss to Ferris State Friday night, the Falcons took back to the ice late this afternoon in an attempt to split the weekend conference series with the Bulldogs.
Interim head coach Dennis Williams shook up the Falcon lines to give a different look to the Bulldogs, and it would prove beneficial early. Five minutes into the first period Bowling Green went on the power play following a Todd Pococke boarding penalty. After a Bulldog shot was flushed out of the FSU zone, senior Tomas Petruska scooped up the loose puck and sent another slap shot into the net to be saved by Nagle. Right at the crease ready for the rebound was fellow senior Kai Kantola who stuffed it past Nagle for the game's opening score and a Falcon 1-0 advantage. The Petruska goal was the first power play goal scored by the Falcons in the team's last eight attempts spanning over four games. It also marked the first time this season that the Falcons would score first in consecutive games.
The Bulldogs did not let the Falcon lead stand long. Off of the far side of the Falcon zone, Travis Ouellette slapped a one-timer toward BG netminder Nick Eno. Eno took the shot off his shoulder, but the rebound would fall behind him and trickle to the back of the cage for the FSU score. At 8:42, the game was tied at one.
With six minutes remaining in the first period, the Bulldogs saw an opportunity and went hard towards Eno. Travis Ouellette took a hard shot from the top of the circles but the loose puck was picked up and Ouellette tapped it in while a pile of players from both teams fell into Eno. The initial call was a goal on the ice, though the Falcons questioned whether or not the cage came off its moorings before the puck crossed the line. After a short review, the goal would stand as called on the ice and Ferris State would take a 2-to-1 lead. The goal was credited to Ouellette, his second of the game.
Ferris State would continue their success in the second period when with 3:56 remaining in to the second period, the Bulldogs scored off of the stick of Brett Wysopal. The score would give the Bulldogs a two-point advantage, 3-1.
Bowling Green would have their chances to score against the Bulldogs in the second period, but the special team unit could not contribute to the Falcons' cause as they went 0-4 on the power play. They had only put two shots on goal with the one-man advantage in the second.
In the third period, Bowling Green did everything that the team could do to regain ground on the bulldogs. Despite two power play attempts, the Falcons could not contribute a goal to their cause. Petruska would re-enter the scoring column but this time with a goal in the sixteenth minute of the third period. Though the Petruska goal brought the Falcons within one goal of the Bulldogs, it was not enough as the FSU defense shut down the Falcons for the final 3:05 to earn the win on home ice.
The Ferris State Bulldogs win completed the series sweep, evening their conference record at 2-2-0-0. Bowling Green falls to 0-3-1-1 in conference play with an overall mark of 0-7-1 for the 2009-10 season. The Falcons next take on the Alaska Nanooks on Friday evening at 7:05 p.m. in the BGSU Ice Arena.
