BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Three weeks removed from their last competition held against the Michigan State Spartans on Dec. 12, 2009 the Bowling Green State University Falcon icers readied themselves for the new year and the Minnesota Golden Gophers following the holiday break. Shrouded around the ironic return of former Falcon Jacob Cepis to collegiate hockey against his previous team, the Falcons and Gophers played in the nightcap game on the first day Dodge Holiday Classic. After a 2-14-2 first half, the Falcons looked to begin 2010 with a strong start to begin the second half of the 2009-10 campaign. Their first period and a half signaled the turn of a new year, but the celebration was stopped short by three unanswered goals by the Gophers en route to a 3-1 loss, Saturday night.
The first period featured tough defense for both the Falcons and the Gophers as both teams failed to score after twenty minutes of play. The Gophers kept the Falcons sticks silent for the first 5:34 of the game before an onslaught of offense from the Brown and Orange arrived on the ice following their first power play chance of the evening. Stemming from a Kevin Wehrs roughing penalty for Minnesota, the Falcons fired off five shots while on the power play, three hitting Gopher goaltender Alex Kangas between the pipes.
Though Bowling Green allowed 13 first period shots on goal, freshman goaltender Andrew Hammond kept the puck free of the net with a flawless frame of work. The Bowling Green penalty kill unit eliminated the only Gopher power play in the first while Bowling Green could not convert on its first two power play chances in the opening period.
The second period opened with the scoreboard lighting up on the Falcons end when freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas scored his seventh goal of the season to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead 1:27 into the period. James Perkin led the charge down the ice on Kangas when he took a shot that bounced off the junior goalie and right onto the stick of Samuels-Thomas with a wide open net to shoot into. The goal was the first goal for the freshman forward since his red-lighter against Notre Dame on Nov. 28. Perkin recorded fourth assist of the year while junior defenseman Andrew Krelove was also given credit with a secondary helper for his second assist on the season.
Hammond remained on fire while the Gophers pour shot after shot on him shortly after the start of the second period. Minnesota turned up the heat on the ice but Hammond kept his cool by saving ten shots in the first 5:08 of the period, including seven consecutive saves immediate after the Bowling Green score. He would finish with 17 saves in the period with a two-period total of 30 on as many chances. The Falcons took the 1-0 lead with them into the locker room after two periods, the third time they have taken a lead into the third period this year.
The Falcon lead lasted only 3:31 into the third period when the streak of 32 consecutive saves by Hammond was broken while the Gophers went on the power play for the third time of the evening. Perkin was whistled for a roughing penalty at 17:35 for roughing giving the Gophers a man up on the Falcons. Following a shot by Tony Lucia of Minnesota, Aaron Ness picked up the puck and made a charge toward the Falcon net. Ness fed Nico Sacchetti a pass who then set up a one-on-one matchup between Mike Carman and Hammond. Carman put a move on the far side of the net, making Hammond give him just enough room to find the back of the net on a shot tying up the game at one on the power-play goal.
After nearly fifteen minutes of solid defense by the Falcons, Minnesota scored its second unanswered goal when Mike Hoeffell wristed a shot from the slot that trickled under the left pad of Hammond resulting in what would be the game-winning goal. Hoeffel's team-leading ninth goal of the year at 17:10 put the Gophers up 2-1, where they would not look back.
To seal the deal for Minnesota, Ryan Flynn added an empty-net goal with 20 seconds remaining to lead the Gophers onto a victory by a 3-1 final score.
For the second time in three games, the Falcons took a lead into the third period but failed to hold on for the win. On Dec. 11, 2009 Bowling Green took a two goal lead into the third period against Michigan State before falling in overtime to the Spartans, 3-2 at home.
Bowling Green was unsuccessful on the power play in five attempts on the night while Minnesota hit on one of their three chances. The Gophers outshot Bowling Green 41-23, yet Bowling Green rattled off two more shots on goal than Minnesota while on the power play, 9-7 in total attempts. BGSU played in perhaps their most disciplined game of the year only committing three penalties after averaging eight penalties per game over their previous five games.
While in goal, Hammond stopped a total of 38 shots on 40 chances including 17 total saves in the second period. His opposition, Alex Kangas, saved 22 shots on 23 BGSU attempts.
The Falcons fall to 2-15-2 on the season while the Gophers improve to 9-9-1 on the year. Minnesota will play Northern Michigan in the Dodge Holiday Classic championship game tomorrow, while Bowling Green prepares for a 4 p.m. CST Sunday afternoon faceoff with Clarkson in the tournament consolation game. Clarkson lost to Northern Michigan 4-0 early Saturday afternoon in the tournament opener.
