LAST TIME OUT
Following a tough 3-1 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday night, the Falcons rebounded with a 4-3 win over the Clarkson Golden Knights in the consolation game of the Dodge Holiday Classic (Minneapolis, Minn.). The Falcons scored two goals in both the first and third periods against the Golden Knights. Kai Kantola (Sr., F) capitalized on his own rebounded shot and Brennan Vargas (So., F) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead early before Clarkson bounced back in the second with two unanswered goals, one on the power play. With a 2-2 tie going into the third, the Falcons' Kyle Page (Sr., D) took a powerful shot while on the power play beating Clarkson goaltender Richie LaVeau for a 3-2 lead. Josh Boyd (Sr., F) then added what was thought to be a insurance empty-net goal turned out to be the game winner after Clarkson added a late score with 8.3 seconds remaining in the game. The final score was Bowling Green 4, Clarkson 3 as the Falcons gained the their third win of the season from Clarkson, who ironically is led by a former Falcon player from the 1983-84 National Championship team, George Roll.
THE STARTING FIVE - Five Facts On BGSU Hockey
(1) In the storied history between these two schools, BGSU and OSU have met a total of 158 times since their first meeting in 1969. The all-time series favors Bowling Green, 89-64--5, though Ohio State has won the last five matchups.
(2) In recent years, the Falcons have struggled in the second half of their seasons. Last year the Falcons finished their last 18 games with a 4-14-0 record. Since 2000-01, BGSU has only had two seasons with post-.500 records in the second half of the season (2000-01, 2004-05) and have a combined record of 49-104-10 in that time. This year, they are currently 1-1-0 through two games in the second half of 2009-10.
(3) Last year, the Falcons swept Clarkson 4-1 and 3-1 then followed with a series against, who else? Ohio State. In that series with the Buckeyes, the Falcons were beaten 8-5 and 4-3 in the BGSU Ice Arena.
(4) The BGSU win over Clarkson last weekend marked the team's first win in the second game of a weekend set this season. Their prior wins over Alaska and Michigan both were in game one of a two game series.
(5) This weekend two potential future teammates will be facing off as each team has a draft pick of the same NHL team. Bowling Green freshman forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Ohio State junior forward John Albert are both draft picks of the Atlanta Thrashers. Albert was a sixth round pick of Atlanta in 2007 while Samuels-Thomas was selected in the 7th round of the 2009 NHL Early Entry Draft.
SCOUTING THE OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
Recent Action: The series against Bowling Green will be the first competitive action the Buckeyes have played in since Dec. 12 after having a long holiday break to rest. Ohio State is riding on a three-game losing streak following a sweep courtesy of the No. 1 Miami Redhawks and splitting a series with arch-rival Michigan. During this losing streak the Buckeyes are only averaging a goal per game and were blanked by the Redhawks in the series opener on Dec. 11, 6-0. The Buckeyes are capable of getting a big win which they proved by defeating current No. 10 Bemidji State in overtime, 2-1. They are also one of only five teams to defeat the now No. 2 Denver University Pioneers and the only to do so by shutout.
Players to Watch: Success seems to follow Zac Dalpe (So., F) who resides as the team leader in goals (10), points (19) and has the highest plus-minus rating with a positive-11. He leads the team in goals scored on the power play, scoring four of the team's ten power-play goals. Beyond Dalpe, however, there is a big question mark as to where the offense will come from. Will it be Sergio Somma (Jr., F) who has the next most goals (6) accompanied with seven assists? Peter Boyd (Jr., F) - no relation to BGSU's Josh Boyd - has five goals and a team-high 11 assists on the year. Boyd and Somma both possess (+8) on-ice ratings, second highest on the team. John Albert (Jr., F) also can score with his four goals on the season, but his nine assists tie him for second-best distributor on the team. Three different Buckeyes have scored two goals while eight Buckeyes have one goal on the year. Combined, 17 Buckeyes have put a goal in the net this season, four more players than Bowling Green. Matt Bartkowski (So., D) may get his name called over the loud speaker a few times as well. He is the league's most penalized player with 21 penalties against for a total of 69 minutes.
Statistically Speaking: The Ohio State special teams unit has struggled all season long possessing the worst overall power play (.102) and penalty kill (.708) numbers in the CCHA. Both of those numbers are also second-lowest in the nation. Their special team net resides last in the league as well at (-21) having given up a league-high 31 power-play goals and scoring a league-low ten. Ohio State also struggles down the stretch, signified by their league-high 31 goals allowed in the third period - which may play into BGSU's favor considering they have scored more goals in the third period (16) than any other period this season. Zac Dalpe is sixth in the conference in goals scored (10) and tied for tenth in power-play goals (4) on the year. The Buckeyes have five NHL draft selections on their team as well as two players who were former members of the USA National Development Program. C.J. Severyn (7th, CAL) and John Albert (6th, ATL) were both part of the U-18 team prior to becoming Buckeyes. Dalpe (2nd, CAR), Bartkowski (7th, FLA) and Taylor Stefishen (5th, NSH) are the other NHL draft selections on the Ohio State roster.
