BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Tuesday afternoon the Falcons (6-8-1) and the West Virginia Mountaineers (11-10) met in Chillicothe, Ohio for a mid-week match up that gave a few new Falcon faces a chances to shine from the mound. Despite an early 2-0 BGSU lead, the Mountaineers bats came alive and plated nine runs over their last three innings at the plate en route to a 10-7 win over Bowling Green.
With Bowling Green serving as the visitors, the Falcons scored twice in the top of the first after Jon Berti led the game off with a walk and a stolen base before Ryan Schlater knocked the sophomore home with a two-bagger. After a wild pitch by West Virginia starter Jonathan Jones sending Schlater to third, Logan Meisler drove home the Falcons' second run of the inning on a RBI single.
Bowling Green also added a third run in the top of the fourth after a text book sacrifice bunt from Clay Duncan allowed Matt Vannett to drive home Dennis Vaughn on an RBI single. After three and half innings, the score was Falcons 3, Mountaineers 0.
In his first collegiate start, sophomore Patrick Martin threw three strong, scoreless innings, including a pair of strikeouts before surrendering a run in the fourth inning. After retiring the first two batters of the inning, Martin surrendered a single to Justin McDavid and walked Mark Dvoroznak before giving up a run scoring single to Kevin Griffin. The run prompted a change on the mound and Michael Barrett came to close the inning out by making Dom Hayes wiff on an outside curveball, after loading the bases.
After scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning via a Vannett double, scored Vaughn for the second time in the game.
After the Falcons opened with a 4-0 lead, West Virginia opened up with a five-run sixth, taking the lead for the first time in the game. After a walk, an error by Schalter and a walk loaded the bases, a wild pitch by Barrett scored Dvoroznak and kept two runners in scoring position. A two-run double to right field by Dom Hayes made the score 4-3 before a run-scoring single gave the Mountaineers the lead. Colin Durborow singled to left field, scoring two, but the inning ended when Derek Spencer nailed a runner at third for the third out.
West Virginia added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh off of freshman hurler Nick Bruns, after a two-out, two-run double by Hayes. Another two runs were added in the eighth inning, extending the lead to five runs, 10-5.
Keeping the trend of the last two games, #T.J. Blanton# skied a two-run home run, scoring Matt Pizulo after a leadoff walk. The home run was the fifth for Blanton in the last three games and his sixth of the season. With the score 10-7, it would be all the closer Bowling Green would get before Jared Hill finished the game after downing the top of the Falcon batting order.
Bowling Green (6-8-1) will then make a quick turnaround for their home opener on Wednesday (March 24) at Warren E. Steller Field. Bowling Green and Central Michigan (7-8) will face off in a non-conference game on Wednesday, beginning at 3:00 p.m.
The home opener will also mark the introduction of the BGSU Baseball Gameday Central, found at the online home of Falcon Athletics, BGSUFalcons.com. Gameday Central will feature rosters, up-to-date statistics, game notes and a live, interactive game blog.
