BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- To foster the trend that Bowling Green has established for itself lately, the Falcons jumped out to an early five run lead against the Ohio University Bobcats and never looked back. The Brown and Orange scored five times by the end of the second inning on Saturday, extending a streak of games having scored in one of the first two innings to seven. Michael Frank tossed his best game of his young career lasting seven innings in their 8-2 win over the Bobcats on Saturday.
Unlike recent trends, it was the top of the Falcon lineup that did most of the damage against OU. Of the ten hits the Falcons accumulated, seven came from the first four spots of the Bowling Green batting order. Logan Meisler went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring three times and knocking in one run and drawing a walk. Dennis Vaughn led the squad with three RBI on the day in a 2-for-4 effort from the plate. Mark Galvin continued his hitting streak with a ninth inning single, extending the streak to 13 games, tying the second-longest hitting streak of the season (Schlater, 13).
Frank (2-3) went a career-long seven innings in gaining his second win of the season, snapping a three-start winless streak. He allowed seven hits and two runs in his ninth start of the year and struck out two Ohio hitters. Having not walked a hitter in the game, Frank ended the game with a 1.00 WHIP.
In the first inning Meisler led the game off with a single to the second base side followed by a walk to #T.J. Blanton#. Vaughn registered his first of three RBI on a double to right field to score Meisler and move Blanton to third. After an error by OU third baseman Bryan Barnes allowed another run to cross the plate for BGSU, a ground ball that resulted in a double play scored Vaughn from third to give the Falcons a 3-0 after one inning.
Bowling Green increased its lead on Meisler's run scoring, second-inning double that plated Matthew Pitzulo. Following a wild pitch and a passed ball, Meisler wheeled his plate across home plate for their fifth run of the game.
With a 5-1 lead going into the sixth inning, Bowling Green put three more runs on the board in the top half of the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Vaughn scored two more Falcons on a single up the middle bring the lead to seven runs. The Bobcats scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but Ross Gerdeman shut down the home team for the last two innings to complete the victory and series win.
Ohio (11-25, 6-8) and Bowling Green (17-18-1, 8-6) will meet for the final time this weekend on Sunday for a 1p.m. series finale. The Falcons have increased their lead in the MAC East second place race to two games over the Bobcats with the win.
