BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped a close 2-1 game to Bemidji State Saturday night, marking the end of non-conference play for the Falcons. Sophomore Bryce Williamson scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 26-of-28 shots in the loss.
Similar to Friday night's game, the Falcons dominated the majority of the opening frame. Bowling Green outshot the Beavers 10-5 in the first period, and spent the majority of the time in Bemidji's zone.
The Falcons finally cashed in on the effort at the 13:35 mark of the period on the power play. A shot from freshman Dan DeSalvo was turned aside by Beaver goaltender Dan Bakala, but the rebound landed right on Williamson's stick. Williamson buried the shot for his team-leading seventh goal of the season, and twelfth of his career. The Falcon power-play tally also gave Bowling Green the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The Beavers responded with an even strength tally at the 14:53 of the second period. Bemidji State sophomore Jeff Jubinville netted his first goal of the season on a rebound in front, evening the tilt 1-1.
The Beavers continued to pressure Bowling Green throughout the frame, outshooting the Falcons 14-2 in the second period.
The Beavers added the final goal of the game with one second remaining in the period. Bemidji State junior David Boehm snuck past the Bowling Green defense in the closing seconds of the frame and netted his first goal of the season on the breakaway. The goal marked Boehm's third tally of his career, and gave the Beavers a 2-1 lead heading into the final period.
Bowling Green was unable to solve Bakala in the third frame, giving the Beavers the 2-1 victory.
The game marks only the second time this season that Bowling Green has scored the opening goal without securing a victory. The only other time came back on Oct. 29 in a 3-2 loss to Notre Dame at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The non-conference loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 6-13-3 on the season. The non-conference win improves Bemidji State's overall record to 11-9-2.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend in a home series against Ohio State. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night, and 5:05 p.m. Sunday night.
