Over The Weekend.
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Bemidji State University Beavers Friday night at the Sanford Center. Junior Andrew Hammond, who took the loss, stopped nine of 13 shots before being pulled at the start of the third period in favor of sophomore Scott Zacharias. Freshman Ted Pletsch scored the lone goal for the Falcons at the 14:48 mark of the second period.
The Falcons lost a close 2-1 game to Bemidji State Saturday night, marking the end of non-conference play for the Falcons. Sophomore Bryce Williamson scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 26-of-28 shots in the loss.
Not Often
Saturday night's game marks only the second time this season that Bowling Green has scored the opening goal without securing a victory. The only other time came back on Oct. 29, in a 3-2 loss to Notre Dame at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Power Play Drought
Sophomore Bryce Williamson's power play tally on Saturday night ended a seven game Falcon power-play drought. The last time the Falcons scored on the power play was against Miami on Nov. 19. Sophomore Mike Fink and freshman Dan DeSalvo both scored with the man advantage in the 4-4 tie.
Non-Conference Loss
The Falcons 4-1 loss to Bemidji State Friday night marked Bowling Green's first non-conference loss of the season. Bowling Green was previously 5-0-1 in non-conference action. The Falcons' only previous non- win came against UConn (4-4 tie) in the opening weekend of the season.
Numbers Don't Lie....Or Do They?
The Falcons could only muster one goal against the Beavers Friday night, despite getting 27 shots on Bemidji State goaltender Andrew Walsh. Bowling Green only allowed 19 shots on goal, marking the eighth time this season the Falcons have outshot their opponent. The defeat marks only the second time this season the Falcons have outshot their opponent and lost. The previous time came on Nov. 5 against Ferris State (34-18) in a 5-3 loss.
*Ironically, that was also the last game that junior goaltender Andrew Hammond was pulled in a game.
More Numbers
The loss to Bemidji Friday night marked the thirteenth time this season the Falcons have failed to score the opening goal of the game. Bowling Green is actually winless in those contests, going 0-11-2 on the season.
How Long?
Bowling Green is currently on a 10-game winless streak, dating back to the Falcons weekend sweep of Canisius Nov. 11-12. During the stretch, Bowling Green has secured points in only two games, including a 4-4 tie against Miami (Nov. 19), and a 3-3 tie against Western Michigan (Dec. 9).
The Last Time
The Falcons lost both games to Ohio State last season, dropping the first contest 4-3 in overtime, and losing the second game 4-2. Wade Finnegan, James McIntosh and Brett Mohler tallied the goals for the Falcons in the first game, while Nick Eno stopped 26-of-30 shots in the overtime loss. Cameron Sinclair and Andrew Krelove tallied for the Falcons in the second game, while Andrew Hammond stopped 23-of-26 shots in the loss. Both games were held at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Hello Buckeyes
This weekend marks the first meeting between a large majority of the Falcons and Ohio State. Seniors Cameron Sinclair and James McIntosh share the record for most points against the Buckeyes on the team. McIntosh has recorded one goal and two assists in seven games, while Sinclair has tallied two goals and one assist in only three games played.
OSU Troubles
Falcon goaltender Andrew Hammond has struggled in the past against Ohio State. The junior has played in three games against the Buckeyes, starting in two of them. Hammond is 0-2-0 in his career against Ohio State, posting a 4.17 goals-against-average with a .850 save percentage.
Goals Still Wanted
The Falcons went into the weekend against Bemidji State ranked last in the CCHA in goal scoring, averaging only 1.80 goals-per-game, their exact same average at the end of last year. Bowling Green is now averaging 1.73 goals per game. Alaska-Fairbanks is the closest to the Falcons, ranking second to last in the CCHA with a 2.17 goals-per-game average.
Second Period Feast And Famine
The second period has featured a ton of goal scoring for and against the Falcons. Bowling Green has scored 17 goals in the second frame, their most by far. The Falcons have also given up more goals in the second period than any other, allowing 25 goals in the second stanza.
Welcome Back Marc Rodriguez
This past weekend marked the first appearance of junior forward Marc Rodriguez this season. Rodriguez had been sidelined the first half of the season with an upper body injury. The Illinois native came into the season with the most career points among Falcons on the current roster. Rodriguez's career point total (20) has since been passed this season by Cam Wojtala (29) and Brett Mohler (22). Senior Cameron Sinclair has tied Rodriguez, hitting the 20 career point mark this season.
Snapping And Current Streaks
Bryce Williamson's goal on Saturday night snapped a personal seven game goalless streak, dating back to a Nov. 19 tie against Miami. Cam Wojtala is currently on an eight game point drought, dating back to the weekend series against Canisius. Ryan Carpenter snapped his own streak, recording an assist on Williamson's power-play tally Saturday night. Carpenter's assist was his first point in seven games as well, dating back to the Nov. 19 game against Miami.
Looking At Ohio State
The Buckeyes have two players tied for the team lead in goals this season with 11. Sophomore Chris Crane and senior Danny Dries are leading the offensive charge for the Buckeyes, recording 19 and 18 points, respectively. Ohio State has seven players who have recorded double-digit points so far this season. In comparison, Bowling Green currently has two players with double-digit points (Ryan Carpenter and Cam Wojtala).
Senior Cal Heeter has been the man for the Buckeyes between the pipes this season. The Missouri native has posted a 12-2-1 record, with a 2.11 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage. Heeter also has two shutouts on the season, and ranks first in the CCHA with a .833 win percentage.
