Falcons Drop Dayton To Record First Win Of Season
February 28, 2012 | Baseball
Box Score
Jake Thomas did exactly what you want out of a leadoff hitter in Tuesday afternoon's game at Dayton. The sophomore outfielder was on base each of his first three plate appearances, scoring two runs and knocking home an RBI on the afternoon. Thomas was not the only one that came to play on Tuesday, as four other Falcons had multi-hit games, including Drew Kuns and Andrew Kubuski, who had three hits apiece to lead the Falcons to their first win of the season, a 5-2 decision at Dayton.
The Falcons would get on the scoreboard first for the fifth time in six games, when Jake Thomas tripled home freshman Brian Bien for the 1-0 lead. The next batter would be T.J. Losby, and he singled home Thomas to not only extend his hitting streak to six, but extend the Falcon lead to two. That would be the end of the day for Flyer hurler Parker Schrage, who received the loss with a line of two innings pitched, two earned runs, and seven hits.
Jake Thomas would lead off the fifth inning reaching base via the hit-by-pitch. After a Losby sacrifice bunt and a Kubuski fly out, Drew Kuns would drive Thomas in for a 3-0 Bowling Green lead. The Flyers would answer in the bottom of the fifth to creep to within two, at 3-1, but that is the closest they would come the remainder of the contest.
Matt Malewitz picked up the win for the Falcons, pitching 3.1 strong innings of baseball. He only allowed two Dayton hits. Freshman Jason Link would relieve Malewitz, going 3.2 innings while only allowing one unearned run. He was relieved in the eighth by classmate Andrew Lacinak. Lacinak would shut the Flyers down one-two-three. He also recorded one strikeout in his relief appearance. Sophomore Ben Singer would finish the Flyers off, although they would threaten in the ninth, but could only push one unearned run across.
In the contest, the Falcons scored five runs on a season-high 15 hits. They committed four errors on Tuesday. The University of Dayton scored two runs on eight hits, while committing two errors in the ballgame.
The Falcons will return to action Saturday, when they will begin play in the Russ Matt Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla. against Mt. St. Mary's.
