March 17, 2012 | Ice Hockey
BOXSCORE
DETROIT – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Miami Saturday afternoon, falling to the RedHawks 4-1 in the final game of the CCHA Tournament. Senior Cam Sinclair scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 29-of-33 shots in the loss.
Miami forward Alex Wideman pushed the RedHawks to a 1-0 lead at 6:51 of the first period. Freshman forward Blake Coleman won possession in the right corner and fit a tight pass between defenders to Wideman on the doorstep for the goal.
Miami continued their offensive pressure, spending the majority of the first period in the Bowling Green zone. The RedHawks' Reilly Smith skated around the Falcons' net, and found senior defenseman Cameron Schilling for a one-timer. Schilling's slapshot goal from the right hash mark with only 0.5 seconds remaining in the opening period, gave Miami the 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
In the second period, Miami capitalized on the power play when freshman Austin Czarnik won an offensive zone draw to Smith on the right point. Smith immediately crossed the puck to freshman forward Tyler Biggs, who fired a one-timer from the left point. The shot beat Hammond, and pushed the score to 3-0 Miami.
Bowling Green cut the deficit to 3-1 midway through the third period, on a tally from Sinclair. Sophomore forward Cam Wojtala skated the puck from the right corner toward the back of the Miami net before slipping a pass to Sinclair at the bottom of the right circle. Sinclair fired a shot off of a Miami defender in front of the net, banking home his sixth goal of the season.
Miami provided the final margin late in the third period, on a deflection in front of the Falcon cage. Smith deflected a point shot from Miami junior Steven Spinell past Hammond, giving the RedHawks the 4-1 lead.
Bowling Green was unable to solve Miami goaltender Cody Reichard for the remainder of the contest, giving Miami the 4-1 win.
Freshman forward Ryan Carpenter snapped his five-game point streak in the loss, failing to secure a point for the first time since the Falcons 4-1 over Northern Michigan (March 4) in the first round of the playoffs.
Hammond finished his first CCHA Championship weekend with 84 saves, and with 286 over the eight games he played in the 2012 tournament. He had two games with 50 or more saves – March 9 vs. Ferris State (54) and March 16 in the semifinal vs. Michigan (55).
The Falcons end their season with an overall record of 14-25-5, improving on last year's record of 10-27-4.
