Box Score
The defensive woes continued on Friday for the Bowling Green State University baseball team, as they committed five errors in a 4-0 loss to Central Michigan. The Mid-American Conference contest was held at Warren E. Steller Field. With the win, the Chippewas improved to 12-14 overall, and 3-1 in Mid-American Conference play. The Falcons fall to 8-17 overall, and 0-4 in the Mid-American Conference.
Cody Apthorpe turned in his best performance of the season on Friday, going 8.2 innings, allowing just one earned run. Apthorpe struck out six, while walking just one Chippewa batter. Apthorpe was not helped by his defense, as they committed five errors on the day, three of which came when he was on the mound.
Central Michigan got on the board in the fourth inning, when Nate Theunissen singled to right field to score the first Chippewa run. However, on the play, Theunissen advanced all the way to third when the ball got by the Falcon right fielder for a two-base error. Theunissen would come in to score on an error by the shortstop.
Central Michigan starter Zach Cooper stymied the Falcons throughout much of the afternoon, pitching a complete-game shutout for his second win of the season. Cooper struck out eight Falcons on 139 pitches.
Apthorpe got the first two outs in the ninth inning, before a line drive was hit back up the middle that ricocheted off of Apthorpe's body. Apthorpe was unable to continue after that, and fellow captain Nick Bruns would replace him. Bruns would get the two-out strike out he needed to get out of the inning, but a wild pitch and error on the play allowed the Chippewa runners to advance to second and third on the play. The next batter would reach on the final Falcon error of the game, scoring two more runs, and giving Central Michigan a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons wouldn't go down without a fight in the ninth, though, as Andrew Kubuski singled through the right side to reach base with just one out. After a Losby walk, Cooper would regroup to strike out the final two batters in the ninth to give the Chippewas the 4-0 win.
The Falcons and Chippewas will meet tomorrow afternoon at 1 pm in game two of their three-game series.
