Box Score
The Bowling Green State University baseball team had a dramatic, come-from-behind victory on Monday afternoon on the way to a 4-3 win over Big East foe, Georgetown. The Falcons took the lead on a Brian Bien single in the bottom of the eighth, and Andrew Kubuski would throw the potential game-tying runner out at third base to cap the victory, the Falcons third of the season. Nick Bruns was credited with his first win of the season, helping the Falcons improve to 3-7 on the year.
Georgetown would jump out to an early lead, scoring a run in the third inning off freshman starter Andrew Lacinak. Lacinak would keep his composure though, allowing just one more unearned run in the fourth. Lacinak went five innings on the day, allowing one earned run on just four hits. He also struck out five batters in his first collegiate start.
Trevor Blaylock would relieve Lacinak, and pitched well, giving the Falcon bats a chance to wake up. The bats would come to life in the bottom of the sixth, when they scored two runs to tie the game at two. The sixth inning rally was aided by a fielding error on the Hoyas third baseman, which would keep the inning alive for Kuns and Kubuski to record RBI singles.
The Hoyas would grab an unearned run in the top of the eighth to take back the lead. The unearned run was scored on a two-out single by the Georgetown third baseman, Corbin Blakey. The Hoyas' lead would be short-lived, as the Falcons responded in the bottom of the eighth. Georgetown reliever Pablo Vinent would struggle with control in the home half of the eighth walking T.J. Losby with one out. Losby would advance to second base on a wild pitch to Jeremy Shay, who would eventually walk. After Kuns flew out, Andrew Kubuski would come to the plate with two outs. Kubuski would single home T.J. Losby to tie the game. The next batter, Brian Bien, would single home Jeremy Shay on the first pitch of the at-bat to give the Falcons the lead.
The Hoyas would lead off the ninth inning with a single just inside the leftfield line to put a runner at first against pitcher Nick Bruns. Bruns would get the next batter out on strikes, as he bunted a pitch foul with two strikes, attempting to advance the runner. The next batter would hit a short flare over Brian Bien's head, but Bien would make a nice over-the-shoulder grab—his third such catch of the day—to record the second out of the inning. The next batter would single to left field, but Andrew Kubuski would throw the potential tying-run out at third base to end the ballgame.
The Falcons, who improve to 3-7 with the win, scored four runs on seven hits, while committing two errors in the game. Nick Bruns was credited with the win to improve to 1-0 on the year. The Hoyas fall to 8-3 on the season, while Pablo Vinent was credited with the loss.
The Falcons will be back in action against the Pennsylvania Quakers tomorrow morning at 11 am from Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
