Baseball Takes Home Top Honors
On Saturday night, the Bowling Green State University athletic department held their annual athletic honors night, in which they recognized and handed out awards to distinguished individuals. Although members of the baseball team could not be in attendance due to a road series at Miami, a few members were still the recipients of top awards. Patrick Martin was recognized as the male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the year for the 2011-12 school year. Last year, Martin was the recipient of the male Junior Scholar-Athlete award. Martin is only the second athlete to receive the award in back-to-back years, after former Falcon baseball player Burke Badenhop did so in 2003-04 and 2004-05. Patrick Martin was also the recipient on the male side of the Falcons Medal of Honor, arguably the most distinguished award given out at the annual banquet. To cap off the night, Jon Berti was named the male athlete-of-the-year for 2011. Jon was given that award for the second straight year as well.
A Look At The Falcons
The Falcons are coming off a 1-2 weekend in Oxford, having lost the final two games of the series to Miami. The Falcons have won five of their last eight, however. Andrew Kubuski continues to pace the Falcons with his .367 batting average, having started 38 of 39 games for head coach Danny Schmitz. T.J. Losby, the only Falcon to play in all 39 games, has provided consistency in the middle of the lineup for BG. Losby leads the team with 31 RBI. As a team, the Falcons have an ERA of 4.80, ranking them in the top-half of the MAC in that category.
Scouting Ohio State
Ohio State enters the game on Wednesday with a record of 22-18 under head coach Greg Beals. Ohio State is coming off a weekend in which they lost two out of three to Illinois, and had previously lost six straight before Sunday's win over Illinois. The Buckeyes are led by Joe Clamacco, who has a .337 average on the season. Josh Deeze, a sophomore first baseman has started all 40 games for OSU, batting .333 with five home runs and 27 RBI. As a team, Ohio State is hitting .269, with an ERA of 4.61.
The Matchup
While the Falcons have an all-time record of just 19-29-4 against Ohio State, Ohio State has not beaten Bowling Green since 2004. Last season, the Falcons defeated Ohio State 5-4 in Columbus. Wednesday's game will serve as the rubber-match for Bowling Green versus the Big Ten Conference in 2012, as the Falcons were defeated by Michigan State (13-3) and have downed Michigan (2-1) thus far. The Falcons have not had a winning season against the Big Ten since 2009, when they defeated Michigan and Michigan State, losing to just Indiana.
