The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated at Ohio State on Wednesday night, falling to the Buckeyes 8-4. The Falcons would tie the game after a three-run fifth inning, but would be unable to keep pace with the home team. Trace Dempsey (1-1) picked up the win for the Buckeyes, while Kevin Delapaz (1-1) was the loser for Bowling Green. Ohio State improves to 23-18 with the win, while the Falcons fall to 16-24 with the loss.
The Falcons were stymied all night long by six different Buckeye pitchers, only racking up six hits and striking out ten times. Only three Falcons had hits on the night, with Tyler Wynn, Brian Bien, and Patrick Lancaster each having two hits.
Ohio State would get on the board in the second inning against starter Trevor Blaylock, scoring one run on three hits in the inning. Blaylock would work out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the score at 1-0. The Buckeyes would tack on two more runs in the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead after just three innings.
The Falcons, who were hitless for the first four innings, would come to life in the top of the fifth inning. Brian Bien would lead off the inning with a single up the middle. That was followed by a Patrick Lancaster bunt single. The runners would advance a base on an errant throw, on an attempt to gun down Lancaster at first base. After Jesse Rait drove in Bien with an RBI groundout, Tyler Wynn would tie the game with one swing, a two-run home run to left field.
Ohio State would take the lead back for good in the home half of the fifth, as a leadoff single would eventually score on a wild pitch. Ohio State would increase the lead in the bottom of the sixth, as the inning was sparked by a defensive error by the Falcons. Ohio State would end up sending nine guys to the plate in the inning, scoring three runs.
The Falcons would get their final run of the game in the top of the seventh, once again thanks to the combination of Bien and Lancaster. After Bien was hit by a pitch to lead off the seventh, Lancaster doubled down the left field line to score Bien from first base. Tyler Wynn would add his second hit of the game in the inning, a double to deep left centerfield.
The Falcons will welcome Ohio University to town beginning Friday afternoon for a three-game Mid-American Conference set. Ohio is 22-18 overall, 11-4 in the MAC, while the Falcons will enter the weekend at 16-24 overall, 5-10 in the MAC.
