Flying High Into The New Season
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team come into the 2013-14 season with momentum on their side. The Falcons enter the year coming off a first round victory in the CCHA Playoffs, defeating Lake Superior State in three games. After dropping the first game in the best of three, Bowling Green went on to win the next two, including a lopsided 7-0 victory in the series-deciding game. The win placed the Falcons in the second round for the third consecutive season.
 Last Game
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team began the 2013-14 season in exhibition style, defeating Wilfrid Laurier University 7-1 on Saturday night (Oct. 5). Playing in front of 2,299 Falcon hockey faithful at the BGSU Ice Arena, the Falcons saw seven different players all score BGSU goals, while all three goaltenders saw action throughout the night.

Wilfrid Laurier Exhibition
Seven different Falcons scored in the game, with senior Bryce Williamson leading the way with three total points. Williamson had an assist in each of the first two goals, and followed it with a goal of his own at the 18:38 mark in the second frame. Cam Wojtala, Ben Murphy, Matt Pohlkamp, Pierre-Luc Mercier, Ryan Carpenter and Dan DeSalvo all found the back of the net in the game.

More Exhibition
The Falcons showcased all three of their goaltenders on the 2013-14 roster. Sophomore Tommy Burke played in the net the entire first period, stopping all three of shots he faced. Freshman Tomas Sholl played a total of 30:34 minutes, turning away 4-of-5 shots, while senior goaltender Scott Zacharias saved the one shot he faced in the final frame.

Looking at Union
The Falcons head to Schenectady, N.Y. this week to face the No. 16 ranked Dutchmen. Bowling Green is 3-3-1 all-time against Union. The first meeting between the two teams dates back to December 30, 1999 when the Falcons won 5-4 in overtime. The last time the two met was last year, as Union College defeated Bowling Green 4-1 on October 13 in the BGSU Ice Arena.

Ranked Success
Bowling Green heads to Union College this week to take on the No. 16 team in the country (National Poll). This Friday will mark season openers for both teams. The Falcons defeated several ranked teams last season, including No. 5 Notre Dame on January 15, 2013. Bowling Green also defeated then No. 10 Western Michigan, 3-2, three days after defeating No. 5 Notre Dame 4-2. Â

Opening Day Facts
In BGSU history, the Falcons are 23-20-1 on opening day. The tie last year against Niagara marked the first time in history that Bowling Green tied an opponent on opening day.
More Opening Day Facts
Over the past 12 season-opening games, the Falcons have played an even six games at home and on the road. Bowling Green owns a record of 4-2 at home, while managing a 1-4-1 record on the road. In BGSU history, the Falcons are an impressive 18-7 in home openers, while only coming away 5-13-1 on the road in 44 games.

Week One (2012-13)
Bowling Green opened the 2012-13 season on Oct.6 , skating to a 2-2 tie with Niagara on the road. Junior Cam Wojtala and senior Bobby Shea scored the Falcon goals, while senior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 28-of-30 shots faced.

NCAA Tournament Foes
The Falcons will face several opponents this year that have played in the NCAA Tournament over the past two years. In 2013, and now WCHA foe, Minnesota State made the tournament with an at-large bid, while Union College advanced to the second round. Bowling Green will also face 2012 Frozen Four competitors Union and Ferris State this year.

Hello WCHA
For the first time in 42 years, the Falcons will not be opening their season in the CCHA. Instead, Bowling Green will join 6 new teams to form the new Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Alabama Huntsville, Alaska Anchorage, Alaska, Bemidji State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota State and Northern Michigan will all join the Falcons in the new league.

The Western Collegiate Hockey Association, college hockey's most historic, tradition-rich and successful conference, proudly marks it's 62nd season of men's competition. The WCHA men's league has produced a record 16 Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winners – given annually to the top player in Division 1 college hockey, while the women's league is home to six Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award winners. The men's and women's WCHA swept the honors in 2012-13, with Drew LeBlanc of St. Cloud State winning the Hobey Baker and Amanda Kessel of Minnesota winning the Patty Kazmaier.

Captains Return (Again)
Senior Cam Wojtala and junior Ryan Carpenter step back out on the ice being named captains for the 2013-14 season, marking it the second consecutive year the duo will serve in the role of the Falcons. The duo has been captains of the Orange and Brown since the 2012-13 campaign. Wojtala recorded eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in 37 games, while Carpenter tallied 18 goals and 15 assists for 33 points in 41 games in the 2012-13 season.
30-point Club (Again)
Carpenter led Bowling Green with 33 points this past season, posting a team-high 18 goals and added 15 assists in 41 games played. It was the second consecutive season in which Carpenter reached the 30-point plateau, as he posted 11 goals and a team-high 19 assists in 44 games in the 2011-12 campaign.
Reaching the 60-Point Plateau
Speaking of, Carpenter reached the 60-point milestone a year ago with 63 career points, leading all Falcons on the current roster. Carpenter is the first Falcon to pass the 60-point mark since David Solway in 2010-11.
Right Behind You
Soon enough, Carpenter may not be the only Falcon to have reached that milestone on the current roster. Senior Cam Wojtala is five points away from the milestone with 55 career points, and junior forward Dan DeSalvo is 10 away with 50 career points.
100 Reasons to Feel Good
The Falcons scored exactly 100 goals last year, reaching the mark for the first time since the 2007-08 season, when Bowling Green scored 106 in 40 games. Under head coach Chris Bergeron, the Orange and Brown have increased in goal scoring every season, scoring 74, 85 and 100 goals respectively.
Burke Returns
Sophomore Tommy Burke returns for his second year as a Falcon. Burke started in 13 games in 16 appearances in the 2012-13 season. He finished the year with at least 20 saves in four games and 30 saves in two, helping him finish with an .889 save percentage. On the year, Burke logged 841:55 minutes in the net finishing with a record of 5-6-2.
The Rookies
Five freshmen hit the ice for Bergeron and Bowling Green this season. Pierre-Luc Mercier, Kevin Dufour, Matt Pohlkamp, Sean Walker and Tomas Sholl will join the roster to make up the new Falcon faces of the 2013-14 team. The rookies feature three forwards (Mercier, Dufour, Pohlkamp), one defenseman (Walker) and one goaltender (Sholl).
Bringing Back the Offense
The Falcons scored 100 goals last year, marking it the first time to reach that milestone since 2007-08. The good news? Well, the Orange and Brown returning members were responsible for 91 of those goals, over 90 percent for the entire team. The Falcons also return members that were responsible for 151 assists and 242 points, also over 90 percent of the team.
Preseason Lovin'
The WCHA release its preseason coaches/media poll last week, picking the Falcons to finish fourth in both polls. The Orange and Brown received 58 total points, trailing Minnesota State (85), Ferris State (65) and Michigan Tech (64). It's the highest preseason ranking Bowling Green has received in the past 12 seasons.
