The 2012 season was a disappointing one for Falcon baseball, finishing with a record of just 20-33. But, the 2013 season is just five days away, and with that comes new optimism. The 2013 season may offer more than just optimism, however, as the Falcons return players at all nine positions, along with the return of some key contributors who missed most, or all, of the 2012 season.
The Falcons have been busy practicing inside Perry Field House in preparation for the season, which will begin Friday afternoon with a tilt with the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky University. For the 23rd straight season, Danny Schmitz will write up the opening day lineup for the Orange and Brown. When the season opens up, Schmitz will put his 588 career wins on the line, leaving him just 12 away from 600. Schmitz will return all seven players who batted over .300, as well as six of his top eight pitchers from 2012.
Redshirt junior Cody Apthorpe and junior T.J. Losby were voted by their teammates to serve as captains for the season. With just two seniors (Nick Bruns and Matt Pitzulo), the Falcons will rely heavily on their large junior class of 14 student-athletes to lead them into battle.
