March 10, 2013 | Ice Hockey
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Lake Superior Sunday night, advancing to the second round of the CCHA Playoffs with a 7-0 victory. Cam Wojtala, Ryan Carpenter, Marc Rodriguez, Ralfs Freibergs and Adam Berkle each scored once for the Falcons, while Dan DeSalvo added two goals on the night. Senior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped all 23 shots he faced in the contest, marking his third shutout of the season and seventh of his career. Hammond's shut out win ties him with Tyler Masters (99-03) as Bowling Green's all-time leader in career shutouts.
Bowling Green came out on fire in the series-deciding game, scoring the first goal just under two minutes into the contest. After gaining possession in the Lake Superior zone, freshman Ben Murphy fed a pass to DeSalvo at the top of the near faceoff dot. DeSalvo turned and fired the puck on net, beating Laker net-minder Kevin Kapalka with a high wrist shot for his fourth goal of the year.
The Falcons scored a second-straight goal just over four minutes later at even strength, giving Bowling Green the early 2-0 lead. Junior Bryce Williamson started the play with a pass to fellow junior Brett Mohler in the lower half of the Laker zone. Mohler turned and circled toward the slot, eventually sending a pass to Wojtala waiting on the far post. Wojtala deflected Mohler's pass over the outstretched blocker of Kapalka, marking his second goal in as many games.
Bowling Green brought the same intensity into the middle frame, scoring two more goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead. DeSalvo scored the first Falcon tally of the period, netting his second goal of the night just under four minutes in. DeSalvo carried the puck into the Laker zone, using the defense as a screen at the hash marks. DeSalvo fired a wrist shot through the Lake Superior defenders, beating Kapalka for his fifth goal of the season.
Just over the halfway mark of the second, Carpenter netted his third goal of the series, scoring a short-handed tally to push the BG lead to four. Sophomore Mike Sullivan started the play with a pass off the high boards, finding Carpenter in the neutral zone with the clear. Carpenter skated the puck into the Laker zone and fired a shot past Kapalka, giving Bowling Green the 4-0 lead heading into the final frame.
Just 2:38 into the third period, Rodriguez netted his third goal of the season, coming on a feed from Brent Tate at even strength. Rodriguez's tally was followed by a sixth Bowling Green goal, coming from Freibergs with a 5-on-3 man advantage. Freibergs' slap shot from the point at 6:18 beat Kapalka for his first career goal, giving the Falcons a 6-0 lead. The Falcons added a final empty-net goal from Berkle at 12:44, securing the 7-0 win for Bowling Green.
The win secures a spot in the next round of the CCHA Playoffs, marking the third year in a row the Falcons have made it to the second series. Bowling Green will head to Miami for round two if Alaska defeats Michigan State in their first round series. If Michigan State wins, the Falcons will go to South Bend, Ind. to take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. All start times are still to be determined.
