Tuesday's game will be the second meeting in 2013 between the Cardinals and Falcons, with the Orange and Brown pulling out the 7-5 victory at Ball State back on April 9. In that contest played at the Ball Diamond, Ethan McKenney picked up the win, while senior Nick Bruns racked up his fourth save (at the time) of the season.
Tuesday's game will also matchup up two coaches with more than 600 career victories apiece, as BSU's Rich Maloney and Bowling Green's Danny Schmitz will do battle. Both coaches have won their 600th career game during the 2013 campaign. On February 23, Rich Maloney won his 600th career game with Ball State's 6-2 win at Lipscomb. Danny Schmitz racked up his 600th career win on April 20, in a 14-6 trouncing of Akron.
The pitching matchup is projected to be Chris Lovejoy (LHP, Junior) for Ball State, opposed by Devin Daugherty (RHP, Freshman) for the Falcons. Lovejoy has not made a start for the Cardinals, compiling a 5.79 ERA in four appearances on the season. Daugherty has been impressive of late, posting a 1.80 ERA for the season in nine appearances. Although he has not started a game this season, he has pitched 15 innings on the year, surrendering just three earned runs.
The Falcons are coming off a weekend in which they defeated Miami University in two-out-of-three contests. After winning Friday's game thanks to Logan Walker's walkoff single, the RedHawks bounced back with a nice 9-1 win on Saturday. In Sunday's rubbermatch, the Falcons fell behind 3-0 in the first, before hanging on for the 10-8 victory in the ninth. Ball State traveled to Eastern Michigan, sweeping the Eagles on the road.
If the Mid-American Conference Tournament started today, Ball State (11-10 MAC) would be the fifth-seed, while Bowling Green (10-11) would be the sixth-seed. Although both teams are members of the MAC, Tuesday's game will not count towards the conference standings.
Ball State is led offensively by Sean Godfrey, batting .322 on the season. Godfrey has started all 42 games in 2013. As a team, Maloney's squad boasts a .266 batting average, with an ERA of 3.92.
The Falcons are also led offensively by a player who has appeared in every game. T.J Losby, a junior from Bryan, Ohio, is batting .348 on the season. As a team, the Falcons are batting .269 with an ERA of 4.00.
With the Mid-American Conference baseball tournament just over two weeks away, the Falcons and Cardinals each have six remaining league games. The Falcons will travel to Ohio this weekend before hosting Buffalo to wrap up the regular season. On the other hand, Ball State will host Toledo and Northern Illinois to finish up the year.
