About Michigan Tech
Michigan Technological University men's ice hockey team is a NCAA Division I program located in Houghton, Mich. The Huskies play at the John MacInnes Student Ice Center (4,200 capacity) and play in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Huskies are three-time NCAA Champions (1962, 1965 and 1975) and are six-time WCHA Champions. Michigan Tech is coached by Mel Pearson (3rd season), and has led the Huskies to their second-best two-season stretch over the last 18 years with 29 wins. Â
The weekend series between the Falcons and Huskies will mark the 15th and 16th time these two teams will play each other. Michigan Tech holds a 7-5-2 all-time record against BGSU. The Orange and Brown are 2-4-2 all-time against the Huskies away from the BGSU Ice Arena, while holding a steady 3-3 record at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The Last Time Out (Michigan Tech - Dec. 13-14)
Game 1: HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Michigan Technological University on Friday night (Dec. 13), dropping the Huskies by a score of 3-2 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association battle. Playing in front of 2,012 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, the Falcons saw two different skaters score goals, while Tommy Burke (6-1-3) turned away a career high 39-of-41 shots in the win.
Game 2: HOUGHTON, Mich – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Michigan Technological University on Saturday night (Dec. 14), 4-4 in overtime, erasing a two-goal deficit over the final three minutes of the third period in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association showdown. Playing in front of 2,429 fans at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena, the Falcons saw four different skaters score goals, while sophomore goaltender Tommy Burke (6-1-4) turned away a career high 43-of-47 shots.

At the BGSU Ice Arena (5000) on Friday and Saturday evenings, Bowling Green (13-10-5, 10-7-3 WCHA) entertains Michigan Tech (8-14-6, 6-8-4 WCHA) in a pair of 7:07 pm ET league encounters. The Falcons, marking their third straight league series at home, are 5-1-2 over their last eight WCHA contests and have climbed up into third place in the league race, one point back of second place Minnesota Stat e and five back of the Bulldogs. Bowling Green, standing 8-3-2 at home this season, is also 1-0-1 vs the Huskies this season, after winning 3-2 and tying 4-4 (ot) in their first two-game set up in Houghton on Dec. 13-14. Michigan Tech, meanwhile, came up with a big 3-2 home-ice win over first place Ferris State last Friday in that series opener to keep themselves in the hunt.
Unbeaten WCHA Streak Snapped
The Falcons have been successful over the past several weeks in WCHA play, earning 12 points in eight games with a 5-1-2 record over their last eight league games. Friday night's 5-3 loss to Lake Superior snapped a six-game unbeaten streak, but the Falcons got back on track with a commanding 6-2 victory on Saturday night (Jan. 25). Over their last eight league games, the Falcons have averaged 3.8 goals per game and allowed only 1.8 GPG, propelling them into sole possession of third place in the WCHA.
Point Taken
Bowling Green has seen 11 different players record at least one multi-point game through 28 games this season. On the year, the Falcons have won 80 percent of the time when a player scores two or more points in a game. Bowling Green is an impressive 6-1-0 when Dan DeSalvo scores at least two points in a game, while the Falcons are 5-1-2 when Bryce Williamson scores at least two points in a game.
Putting The Team First
Junior forward Dan DeSalvo has tallied at least one assist in six of the Falcons last seven games, pushing him to a career-best 21 assists through 28 games. DeSalvo's career year pushes him over the 20 assist mark for the second time in as many years, and is the first Falcon to record 20 or more assists in back-to-back years since Jonathan Matsumoto did from 2005-07. During the 2013-14 season, DeSalvo has recorded seven multi-point games and leads the WCHA in overall assist scoring, averaging 0.75 APG.
Setting High Standards
With Bowling Green averaging 3.14 goals per game this season (ranking second in the WCHA) and accounting for 88 goals through 28 games, the Orange and Brown are bound to have some players putting up big numbers. Listed below are players who have set new career highs with eight games still remaining in the regular season:
* Dan DeSalvo - 27 points (6-21=27); breaking his single season career-best 25 points in 2012-13.
* Bryce Williamson- 21 points (10-11=21); breaking his single season career-best 19 points in 2012-13.
* Mark Cooper- 20 goals (10-6=16); breaking his single season career-best of 16 points in 2012-13.
* Adam Berkle - Eight goals; breaking his single season career-best of seven goals in both of his first two years.
* Marcus Perrier- Eight assists; breaking his single season career-best of six assists in a season.
* Brent Tate - 17 points; breaking his single season career-best of 13 points in his freshman campaign.
Sloat Gets On The Board
Jake Sloat made his second start of the season after missing the entire 2012-13 season due to injury on Saturday night in the Falcons' 6-2 victory over Lake Superior State. Sloat recorded a secondary assist on Adam Berkle's breakaway goal at the 15:59 mark in the third period, earning his first point since scoring a goal against Ferris State University on March 10, 2012 in the CCHA playoffs.
Offensive Showcase
Bowling Green tallied a total of 27 points (9g, 18a) over the weekend against Lake Superior State University, marking their second highest overall point total against an opponent over a weekend this year. The Falcons saw five different players record at least one goal, and three (Adam Berkle, Ryan Carpenter and Mark Cooper) record multiple goals. The Orange and Brown's highest overall point total over a weekend was 29 points (11g, 18a) against Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 3-4.
Pohlkamp Scores
Freshman right-winger Matt Pohlkamp recorded his sixth goal of the season at the 11:49 mark in the opening period during the Falcons' 6-2 win over the Lakers on Saturday night. The even-strength goal was Pohlkamp's first since lighting the lamp on Jan. 3 against Alabama Huntsville. For the year, Pohlkamp has recorded 6-4=10 and is second among freshman in scoring on the current roster.
Making His Presence Felt
Junior co-captain Ryan Carpenter made his season debut against Alaska on Jan. 10 and has made a loud statement since returning to the ice. Carpenter has totaled four points in as many games, including two goals against Lake Superior on Jan. 24, and has helped the Falcons go 2-1-1 during the stretch. Carpenter is on a current two-game point streak, scoring 2-1=3 in that stretch. Carpenter led the team last season with 18 goals and 15 assists in 41 games.
Not To Be Outdone
Sophomore forward Brent Tate has also shown consistency over the past several weeks. The winger from Canton, Mich., has totaled at least one point in four of his last five games, including a goal and an assist in the Falcons' 4-1 win over Alabama Huntsville on Jan. 4. On the year, Tate has recorded eight goals and nine assists in 24 games thus far.
First Time For Everything
Sean Walker recorded assists on back-to-back nights this past weekend against Lake Superior. The rookie defenseman is on a current two-game point streak for the first time in his young Falcon career. Walker has recorded one goal and five assists in 27 games this season. Overall, Walker has helped the freshman compile 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 total points on the year.
Sholl Along
Freshman netminder Tomas Sholl put together a solid performance against the Lakers last Saturday night (Jan. 25), turning away 25-of-26 shots to earn his fourth victory of the year. On the year, Sholl is 4-7-0 with a 2.44 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.
Month of December
The hockey team ended the month of December with an overall record of 3-2-1, improving from a 2-1-1 mark a year ago. Overall, Bowling Green has improved their win total in each month this season compared to last, and has four more wins entering January.

Michigan Tech Last Week: Michigan Tech played host to nationally-ranked Ferris State University last weekend, going 1-1-0 against the Bulldogs at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena in Houghton, Mich. The Huskies defeated FSU on Friday night (Jan. 24), as freshman Reid Sturos tallied two goals to hand the BUlldogs just their third loss in league play.
Ferris State got back on the winning track on Saturday night (Jan. 25), shutting out the Huskies on their home ice. The Bulldoges scores one goal each period to earn the series split. The two teams tied with exactly 25 shots on net, as the Huskies could not solve Ferris State's netminder Charles Williams in the loss.
With the series spilt, the Huskies are tied for seventh overall entering the weekend showdown with Bowling Green. MIchigan Tech's overall record currrently sits at 8-14-6 and 6-8-4 in league play. Ferris State, who remained in sixth place in the USCHO Poll this week, stayed on top of the WCHA with a 13-3-2 league record, while holding an 18-6-3 overall record.

Bergeron And The Media: Week 15 - Michigan Tech
Head coach Chris Bergeron took some time on Tuesday afternoon (Jan. 28) to meet with the media. His team is currently 13-10-5 overall and 10-7-3 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Falcons will conlude their six-game homestand this weekend at the BGSU Ice Arena, taking on the visiting Huskies of Michigan Tech. The two teams met on Dec. 13-14 with Bowling Green going 1-0-1, including a 4-4 overtime tie after erasing a two-goal deficit with under three minutes remaining.
