Falcons Defeat Simon Fraser, 7-2, In Exhibition Affair

The Falcons outshot Simon Fraser by a dominate 61-13 total, and used a four-goal third period to defeat the visiting Simon Fraser in the exhibition affair.

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated visiting Simon Fraser University, 7-2, on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon in an exhibition affair. Playing in front of the Falcon faithful for the first time in just over six months, the Falcons showcased a resilient offensive surge throughout the entire game.
"Overall I am pleased with our effort today," BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron said. "I feel like this game mattered to us and it was great to see our guys go out and compete."
The Orange and Brown received goals from seven different skaters, as the Falcons went on to score at least one goal in every period. BGSU was led offensively by its freshman class, combining for four goals and five assists in the game. Tyler Spezia paced the Falcons on the offensive end, tallying one goal and three assists (four points) in his first collegiate action. The Orange and Brown also got strong play from rookie forwards Mitchell McLain (two points) and Jakob Reichert (two points).
"It was the first time for all of us to go out and compete against someone else," senior forward Dan DeSalvo said. "It was a great experience for us today and we are looking forward to next weekend."
With strong play from the freshman class, the Falcons' upperclassmen jumpstarted the offensive surge in the first period. Bowling Green broke a scoreless drought 7:30 into the opening act, as junior forward Ben Murphy gathered a rebound fired from Mike Sullivan near the blue line and lit-the-lamp for the first marker of the game.
"I thought our guys did a great job working together and supporting each other," Bergeron said.
After Simon Fraser scored the equalizer 10:37 into the first period, starting goaltender Tommy Burke made his biggest save of his limited action with 3:19 remaining in the period. After a power play opportunity ended for the Falcons, SFU quickly acted and found themselves into their attacking zone 1-on-1 with Burke. However, Burke stayed in command and made the save to keep the game deadlocked at 1-1 heading into the second frame.
Bowling Green continued their offensive mindset in the second frame, outshooting SFU by a dominate 25-2 total. The Falcons, who outshot Simon Fraser 17-6 in the first frame, took advantage of their opportunities at the net and scored twice in the period.
Sullivan, who tallied three points in the game and assisted Murphy's goal in the first period, took a pass from defensemen Sean Walker near the blue line and fired a one-timer past SFU for an even-strength goal at the 2:09 mark. The goal gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead at the time before SFU again came back with the equalizer at the 6:00 mark.
A back-and-forth affair through the first period and a half, Bowling Green scored the go-ahead goal with 4:57 remaining in the period and never looked back. At the end of a power play chance for SFU, McLain snuck past SFU's backend and fired a shot past the goaltender's left leg pad in the slot, giving BGSU a 3-2 lead.
The Falcons never allowed SFU another goal for the remainder of the game, as rookie netminder Chris Nell made all five save opportunities in the final frame to keep Simon Fraser scoreless. BGSU again dominated in the third and final frame, outshooting SFU by a 19-5 total. The Falcons exploded for four goals in the period to pull away, 7-2, in the exhibition matchup.
"I thought our offense played great today," DeSalvo said. "It was great to get back in front our fans and get back onto the ice." DeSalvo said.
The Orange and Brown outshot SFU by a total of 61-13 in the game. The Falcons also killed off 2-of-3 power-play SFU opportunities, while the Orange and Brown went 1-for-5 on the power play. Spezia also tallied a shorthanded goal at the 12:20 mark in the final frame. All three of the Falcons' netminders got action between the pipes in the game, as all three combined to make 11-of-13 saves.
The Falcons will be back in action next weekend (Oct. 10-12), taking on Miami University in a home-and-home series. Bowling Green will play host to the Redhawks on Oct. 10 at the BGSU Ice Arena before heading on the road to wrap up the series on Sunday, Oct. 12.
