A pair of freshmen each tally two goals in a back-and-forth battle between a pair of top-20 teams.
Marquette, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team tied Northern Michigan University Friday (Dec. 5) night, scoring five goals in the first two periods to earn a 5-5 overtime draw with the Wildcats in the first game of their two-game set. Freshman Ben Greiner –who tallied his first two collegiate goals—and Brandon Hawkins each found the back of the net twice, while junior netminder Tommy Burke (4-2-2) turned away 28-of-33 shots on the night.
In a clash between two top-20 teams, the 14th-ranked Falcons (10-3-2, 7-1-1) and the 19th-ranked Wildcats (8-3-2, 5-3-1) each earned one point in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings. Bowling Green currently sits in third place with 15 points, while the 'Cats stand in fourth with 11 points.
Entering the game, the two ranked teams allowed a combined 1.7 goals-per-game to its opponents, only to find themselves in a shootout which featured four lead changes and four ties over the course of the tilt – eventually combining for 10 goals in 65 minutes of action. The back-and-forth clash began with a four-goal first period between the two teams.
"Scoring five goals on the road, we'll take that all day," Bergeron said. "We did some good things offensively tonight."
The Wildcats scored the first goal of the contest, coming off the stick of Shane Sooth at 5:49 in the opening period. On the power play, NMU took a Bowling Green turnover into the Falcons zone and worked the puck over to John Siemer. The sophomore winger's shot near the top of the slot was saved by Burke, but could not hold onto the puck as it trickled away. Sooth quickly fired the rebound to the back of the twine, lighting the lamp to give Northern Michigan a 1-0 lead.
Bowling Green answered quickly, scoring the equalizer just 1:37 later at even strength. Matt Pohlkamp fired a stretch pass across the blue line to sophomore blue liner Sean Walker. The Keswick, Ontario native fired a shot from the point towards Wildcats' Mathias Dalhstrom. With a screen in front, Greiner re-directed the puck past Dahlstrom, giving the freshman forward his first collegiate goal.
"He played well. This wasn't an accident in he was in the lineup. He earned it," head coach Chris Bergeron said. "He's played well in practice the last little bit. He really had a good week of preparation and deserved to play, and he took advantage of it."
