February 15, 2014 | Ice Hockey
The Seawolves scored four unanswered goals in the third period to defeat BGSU.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Bowling Green State University lost to the University of Alaska Anchorage on Saturday night (Feb. 15), by a score of 5-2, in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Playing in front of 2,881 fans at the Sullivan Arena, the Falcons got goals from defensemen Marcus Perrier and Mike Sullivan, while sophomore Tommy Burke turned away 17-of-21 shots on the night.
The Orange and Brown scored on the power play for the first time in three games, going 1-for-3 with the man advantage. Alaska-Anchorage also converted on the power play, going 1-for-2 with the on-ice advantage.
Similar to Friday's contest, the Falcons got on the board first, netting an even-strength goal at the 15:06 mark in the opening act. Senior winger Bryce Williamson took possession of the puck at the far end of the half boards in the Falcons' zone, before spinning around and flipping a pass towards Perrier at the point. Perrier sent a one-timer from Williamson past UAA's starting goaltender Rob Gunderson, giving Bowling Green the early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons' 1-0 lead stood for the remainder of the first period, as the Orange and Brown dominated the Seawolves in shots, holding a 10-3 advantage heading into the middle frame. Burke helped kill the only UAA power-play opportunity in the first period.
Alaska-Anchorage scored the equalizer at 5:07 in the second period, coming at even-strength off a 3-on-2 rush. The Seawolves sent a pass to the left circle and beat Burke near the left side of the crease, tying the game a 1-1.
The Orange and Brown answered back with a power-play goal with 6:49 remaining in the second stanza, to regain the Falcons' lead to 2-1. With the on-ice man advantage, Bowling Green worked the puck around the blue line until Sullivan collected a pass from Ben Murphy at the center point. Sullivan fired a slap shot into a screen in front of the net and beat Gunderson's leg pad just inside the right post.
The marker was Sullivan's second goal of the season, and first tally since Nov. 23 when the junior defenseman lit-the-lamp against Minnesota State.
Leading 2-1 late in the second period, UAA got an opportunity to tie the game once again with a penalty shot. However, Seawolves' Brett Cameron's attempt hit off the post and the Falcons kept a 2-1 lead entering the final frame.
Alaska-Anchorage answered back once again, scoring three consecutive goals in a2:26 time span to give them a 4-2 lead with 12:25 remaining in regulation. Goals by Zack Rassell, Matt Bailey and Scott Allen lifted the Seawolves in front of the Orange and Brown.
The Falcons will return to the BGSU Ice Arena next Friday (Feb. 21), facing off the U.S. National Development Team in an exhibition affair. The puck is slated to drop at 7:07 p.m. on Friday night.
