OXFORD, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team tied the game in the ninth with a two-out double off the bat of Brian Bien, but surrendered a walkoff double in the bottom of the 10th inning on Friday night, losing to Miami 5-4. The RedHawks improved to 21-24 with the win and 11-8 in Mid-American Conference play. The loss drops the Falcons to 20-21 on the season and 10-9 in the MAC.
Both starting pitchers were outstanding in Friday night's game, but neither would factor into the decision. Both Mike Frank and Seth Varner went eight innings, striking out eight batters each. Frank became Bowling Green's all-time leader for career innings pitched, surpassing Kip Young's previous mark of 295.0 innings pitched. Frank now has 298.0 innings pitched in his career and is second all-time with 211 strikeouts.
Bowling Green scored first in the game, as Trey Keegan scored on a two-out error by Miami. Keegan had singled to begin the inning, and moved to third on Patrick Lancaster's single later in the inning.
Miami would score the next three runs in the game to take a 3-1 advantage into the seventh inning, where the Falcons closed to within a run on a Jake Thomas two-out single. Walker scored on the play, but Thomas was retired between first and second to end the inning.
The RedHawks would tack on an insurance run against Frank in the eighth inning, on a two-out, solo home run off the bat of catcher Max Andresen.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, Lancaster would begin the inning with a hit by pitch. With a runner on first base and two outs, Jesse Rait would walk to turn the order back to the top for Brian Bien. Bien would rip a pitch into the left field corner, scoring both runners for a game-tying double. Bien was 3-for-4 in the game with two RBI.
Ethan McKenney, who worked a scoreless ninth, would surrender a leadoff single in the bottom of the 10th inning just over the outstretched arm of a Bien leap at short. After a sacrifice bunt and intentional walk, Miami DH Gary Russo would rip a double over Thomas's head in left field to give Miami a 5-4 win. It was Bowling Green's first loss in extra innings this season.
The two teams will resume their series on Saturday afternoon, with Brett Fitzwater taking the hill for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
