WINTER HAVEN, Fla.—The University of Maine scored two runs in the eighth inning on Friday at Chain O'Lakes Stadium, defeating Bowling Green State University 6-4 on Friday in the RussMatt Invitational. With the loss, the Falcons are now 5-8 on the season, while Maine improved to 7-13 on the campaign with the victory.
The start of the game looked promising for the Orange and Brown, as the Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead. Andrew Lacinak was sharp in the early going, striking out five and allowing just one earned run during the first four innings.
Brandon Howard started things in the first inning with a chopper to the third baseman, which he was able to beat out for an infield single. Brian Bien followed with a single into left-centerfield, and the Falcons had runners on first and second with nobody out. Trey Keegan would then hit a grounder to shortstop, but beat it out to avoid a double play.
With runners on the corners, Maine starter Justin Courtney attempted to pick off Keegan at first, but his errant throw traveled down the right field line allowing Howard to score and Keegan to scamper all the way to third. Keegan eventually scored on a two-out single by Nick Glanzman, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead after an inning.
Maine would be the beneficiary of a Falcon defensive blunder in the top of the second, capitalizing to score an unearned run and cut the Bowling Green lead in half, at 2-1. The Black Bears tied the game at two runs apiece in the top of the fourth, getting a two-out solo home run down the left field line to even the score.
The Falcons scratched a run across in the bottom of the fifth to take a lead, as Kory Brown scored on a Howard double to right-centerfield. Brown had walked earlier in the inning and stolen second base to move into scoring position.
Maine came right back in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs of their own to take the lead for the first time in the game. A double, single, and walk loaded the bases for the Black Bears with nobody out in the inning. The next two batters were able to drive home runs, recording a sacrifice fly to center and a ground out to third to give Maine a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
The Falcons weren't done, as Matt Smith got things started in the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single down the third base line to reach. Glanzman then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Smith into scoring position. A Randy Righter walk was followed by a Jesse Rait single up the middle, but Maine's second baseman was able to keep the ball in the infield to load the bases. Hunter Clanin then walked on four pitches, pushing Smith across home plate to tie the game at four.
Maine then turned to their bullpen, and worked out of the jam, keeping it a tied game into the seventh inning.
The game remained tied into the eighth, when Maine recorded four hits and scored two runs to grab the 6-4 lead over the Falcons.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Bowling Green had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth. After the first two were retired, Howard singled to right field to keep the game alive. Greg Basalyga then walked in his pinch hit appearance to put the tying run on base, but the game would end on a fly out to deep left-centerfield off the bat of Keegan.
Bowling Green will conclude play at the RussMatt Invitational on Saturday morning, when they take the field to play Cornell. First pitch at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. is scheduled for 10:15 a.m. against the Big Red.
