BOWLING GREEN, Ohio—The Bowling Green State University baseball team won their fourth consecutive game on Saturday afternoon, defeating Buffalo 13-2 on Senior Day at Warren E. Steller Field. Bowling Green (23-27, 14-13) now turns their attention to the Mid-American Conference Tournament, which begins next Wednesday (May 20) at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio.
"It's always special to pick up a win on Senior Day, especially in the fashion that we did it today," head coach Danny Schmitz said. "The offense swung the bats well, the pitching was strong, and the defense played a solid game as well. We are looking forward to getting to Avon for the MAC Tournament next week."
Four seniors—Brian Bien, Brandon Howard, Jason Link, and Jesse Rait—started in the game while the fifth, Trevor Blaylock, pitched three scoreless innings in relief. Link, who started on the mound on Thursday, was introduced as the designated hitter before being lifted for pinch-hitter Greg Basalyga in the bottom of the second.
Leading 12-0 in the top of the seventh, the three senior position players took the field. But, before the inning could start, head coach Danny Schmitz lifted each of them, one-by-one, as Howard, Rait, and Bien came off to a standing ovation.
The Falcons wasted no time jumping on the Bulls, as Trey Keegan hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning.
Having already clinched a MAC Tournament spot, starter Zac Carey went just two innings in the game, but picked up his sixth win of MAC play to improve his league record to 6-0. Trevor Blaylock relieved him, tossing three scoreless innings and striking out two.
BGSU extended their lead with three more runs in the bottom of the third, as Matt Smith and Nick Glanzman recorded RBI hits in the game. Kory Brown and Greg Basalyga also recorded singles in the inning.
The big inning of the afternoon came in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Falcons exploded for seven runs to take a 12-0 lead. The first six Falcons reached in the inning, including four straight hits to start the frame. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Keegan and Smith brought home four runs to give BGSU a 12-run advantage and knock Buffalo starter Mike McGee out of the game.
BGSU's pitching of Carey, Blaylock, Rob Zenas and Kody Brown combined to allow just one earned run on the afternoon while striking out eight. Buffalo managed just six hits off Falcon hurlers in the game.
The Falcons hit multiple home runs for the second straight game, taking their season tally to 25. Keegan hit one in the first, while Nick Glanzman hit one for the second straight day in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Tyler Greiner also registered his first career home run.
Bowling Green finishes the regular season with an overall record of 23-27 and a MAC ledger of 14-13. After starting 5-16 and 0-5 in MAC play, the Orange and Brown has gone 18-11 overall and 14-8 in the conference to finish the regular season. BGSU will begin the MAC Tournament next Wednesday as the No. 6 seed. Bowling Green will play either Toledo or Ohio, who will finish as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds depending on the result of Ohio's game vs. Miami later today.
