BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University hockey team benefited from three power play goals and rallied from a two-goal deficit to take a second-period lead, but Ohio State produced a two-goal rally of their own in the third to defeat the Falcons 5-4 at the BGSU Ice Arena on Friday, Oct. 21. Matt Pohlkamp earned his third career two-goal game, Sean Walker scored for the third game in a row, and Frederic Letourneau scored his first career goal in the defeat.
"I thought our compete level was good and in the ebs and flows of the game, I thought our guys figuratively gave some punches and took some punches," Bowling Green hockey head coach Chris Bergeron said. "It was a back-and-forth game, but we need to execute better, specifically in zone on the power play. Last weekend it was forecheck, but tonight it was in the zone."
Scoring came early and often in this non-conference tilt against the No. 19 Buckeyes, and it was Ohio State who broke the seal. Ronnie Hein took a shot that goaltender Chris Nell saved as the first minute expired. BGSU tried to clear the rebound, but Hein found the puck again in the slot and sent it home at the 1:10 mark for a 1-0 lead.
One of the reasons for the scoring flurry was the success both teams had with a man advantage. Bowling Green showed a newfound ability to convert on the power play early, and it helped them tie the game. OSU's Dakota Joshua was called for boarding at the 2:49 mark of the first, and just 34 seconds later, Alec Rauhauser found Matt Pohlkamp from the slot, and Pohlkamp tipped the puck past Matt Tomkins to even the game 1-1.
BGSU controlled offensive play for much of the first period and held a 13-5 edge in shots after 20 minutes, but it did not play out on the scoreboard. Kevin Miller scored an even-strength goal for the Buckeyes midway through the first, and OSU held the 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Ohio State scored again early in the second period to take a two-goal lead. Jacob Dalton was called for hooking just 2:29 into the frame, and Mason Jobst scored OSU's first power play goal of the night with 27 seconds left in the advantage.
The Falcons wasted no time in cutting the lead in half thanks to another chance with an extra man. Almost immediately after OSU's third goal, Brendon Kearney was sent off for roughing. Pohlkamp lit the lamp for the second time after 49 seconds of power play. Mitch McLain found Pohlkamp all by himself in front of Tomkins, and Matt did not miss. His two goals in this game were the first two of the season for him, and it was his third career two-goal game.
Bowling Green's next power play opportunity was just as successful. Drew Brevig went to the box for interference at the 13:23 mark, and the Falcons scored again just 44 seconds later. This time, Sean Walker sent a screamer from the blue line past Tomkins to even the score at three. Walker has found the net for three straight games, the best stretch of his career.
Two minutes later, Walker earned his second point of the night with an assist that helped BGSU take a 4-3 lead. His pass found Frederic Letourneau, who sent a laser from the left circle into the net for his first collegiate goal. It was BGSU's third straight goal of the second and first even-strength score of the night, and the Falcons ended the second with a 4-3 lead.
However, Ohio State saved their best on the power play for the third period. The Buckeyes carried over a man advantage from the second frame and scored 34 seconds into the third with a goal from Nick Schilkey. Midway through the period, Tanner Laczynski also scored on a power play for a 5-4 lead.
BGSU took eight shots in the third period, but none of them could get past Tomkins as the Buckeyes captured the victory.
Bowling Green completed the game with a 32-22 edge in shots, the most for the team in five games this season. The Falcons were also 3-for-7 on the power play. Entering the night, BGSU had been just 2-for-33 with the man advantage in the first four games. Ohio State was 3-for-5 on the power play. This was the first BGSU game since Feb. 26, 2005 in which both teams scored three or more times on the power play.
Mark Friedman helped the cause with two assists to mark his first multi-point game of the season. It was the fifth multi-assist game and eighth multi-point game of his career. Mitch McLain and Alec Rauhauser each had their first assists of the season. With a goal and assist, Walker now leads the Falcons with five points, while Pohlkamp's two goals give him four.
BGSU is now 0-4-1 thus far in the 2016-17 season, while Ohio State improves to 2-0-2. The two will meet again at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Columbus, Ohio.
