Three Goal Flurry Sends Falcons to 5-1 Win Over NMU
November 11, 2016 | Ice Hockey
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University hockey team soared to a 3-0 first period lead and never faced much drama as the Falcons thrashed Northern Michigan 5-1 for their first road WCHA victory of the season. The game was held at the Berry Events Center on Friday, Nov. 11. Ten BGSU skaters scored points to guide the Falcons in the victory.
"We had a good start and it carried on the entire first period," said BGSU head coach Chris Bergeron. "I didn't think we answered with a very good second, credit to Northern Michigan. I thought we finished strong, so all in all, it was a good road win".
BGSU owned the first 20 minutes of play.
The Falcons quickly got the benefit of a man advantage when NMU's Rylan Yaremko was called for hooking 2:54 into the game. They had three shots in the 5-on-4, but netminder Atte Tolvanen saved the first two. Finally, with ten seconds remaining in the penalty, Sean Walker snuck one past Tolvanen for the first score of the game.
On the play, solid puck movement led Brett d'Andrea feeding Sean Walker. Walker launched the shot from the blue line for his fourth goal of the season.
The Falcons successfully killed two key penalties in the middle of the first period, including 80 seconds of 5-on-3 advantage for the Wildcats. They also defended well during a Frederic Letourneau penalty and scored almost immediately when he came back on the ice at the 13:57 mark of the first.
With 5:34 left in the opening frame, Kevin Dufour put a wrister into the net. Tolvanen was able to get part of the puck as it went past but could not keep it out. Pierre-Luc Mercier was credited with his second assist of the period, and Alec Rauhauser added his first point.
BGSU lit the lamp again a few minutes later following a drop pass from Stephen Baylis to Matt Pohlkamp. Pohlkamp slid the one-timer home for a commanding 3-0 lead at the 17:24 mark of the first. It was his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Northern Michigan was able to cut into the lead early in the second period, when Troy Loggins managed to use an angled shot to light the lamp. However, the single goal would be all the Wildcats would manage against Nell.
Bowling Green's offense added two goals in the third period from d'Andrea and Mitch McLain for the final 5-1 tally. The Falcons were whistled for only one penalty, a slashing call midway through the third, during the final 40 minutes of the game.
The offense owned a 15-5 edge in shots on goal after 20 minutes and finished ahead 30-25. On defense, Nell's 24 saves are his second-most this season, and he has now allowed two or fewer goals in four of his last five starts.
Pohlkamp, d'Andrea and Mercier each had multi-point games. Pohlkamp and d'Andrea each had a goal and an assist, while Mercier posted two assists. This was Pohlkamp's fourth multi-point night of the season and the 11th of his career, while Mercier tallied his second of the year. It is the second multi-pointer of d'Andrea's career.
McLain and Walker each earned their fourth goals of the season against NMU. Dufour's goal was his first of the year to go along with five assists.
The win vaults BGSU's record to 3-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the WCHA. Northern Michigan is also 3-7-1, but they are only 1-5-1 in conference action. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at 7:07 p.m. in Marquette.
