BELLEVUE, Wash. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated by Seattle University, 3-0, Friday evening at Bannerwood Park to open up the four-game series. Seattle scored two in the third and one in the fifth, while out-hitting the Falcons, 9-3.
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 1-2 on the season. Seattle improves to 2-3 with the victory. The game served as Seattle's home opener, as the Redhawks opened the season on the road at St. Mary's College.
"For the second-straight Friday, we got a really good effort out of C.J. and the rest of our pitching staff," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But we talk about the three phrases, and our offense wasn't good enough today."
For the third-consecutive game to open the 2016 season, redshirt-junior Nick Glanzman recorded a multiple-hit game. Glanzman went 2-for-3, notching two of the Falcons' three hits. Bowling Green's other hit came from freshman Logan Giddings – the hit was the first in Giddings' career.
After starter C.J. Schildt stranded a total of three runners in scoring position over the first two frames, Seattle scored two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Sheldon Stober knocked a solo home run to left field to put the hosts on the board. Three more hits then led to Seattle's second run of the frame, as Brock Carpenter shot a single the other way into right field to plate Griffin Andreychuk, who singled and stole second earlier in the inning.
BGSU's southpaw recorded two-straight outs with a runner at second in the first, and then struck out Chase Ridder with two runners in scoring position in the second, prior to Seattle's two-run third. After working a perfect fourth, Seattle scored again in the fifth when a passed ball allowed the Redhawks to plate a runner on third.
In total, Schildt worked five innings for the second time in as many starts. The lefty registered a career-high six strikeouts, while allowing six hits and no walks. One of Seattle's runs was unearned on Schildt's final line.
Right-handed pitcher Devin Daugherty took over for Schildt, and proceeded to shove two shutout innings. Daugherty has now thrown six shutout frames to open the new season. Righty Trevor Farrell made his 2016 debut in the eighth, and stranded two runners on base en route to a clean inning.
The Falcons threatened in the fifth, as Giddings and Glanzman struck for back-to-back base hits with one out, but Justin Mott – who gunned down his first would-be base stealer of the season in the contest – and Riley Minorik were retired consecutively to end the threat. Mott also drew a walk in the ballgame, as did Hunter Clanin – his fourth on the young season.
For Seattle, starter Ted Hammond pitched seven shutout innings. He opened the game with 14-straight strikes, and exited the game having just yielded three hits. The right-hander struck out five, and walked two.
The Falcons and Redhawks will resume the four-game series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader. The first game – which is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST – will last seven innings. The second game is slated to start 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game, and will last nine innings. Zac Carey is scheduled to pitch the first game for the Orange and Brown, while Zach Kendall will get the ball in the second ballgame.
